Fanboys Anonomous
Hi. My name is Dave, and I've been a fanboy for 13 years. It started when I was in 3rd grade... The kid next door got a NES, and I would always go over there and play Duck Hunt. Shortly, after, I got addicted to Mario, and it was all like a rollercoaster from there. When the SNES came along, I had the first inklings of a fanboy in me. By that time, I owed a lot of time to my console of choice, and that kind of activity just breeds loyalty. I scorned the Sega Genesis, and complained repeatedly about its graphics. From then on, I was the fanboy to be reckoned with. Through the years, my relationship with Nintendo has grown to continually form a love/hate kind of deal. I loved Nintendo for keeping me alive through the most difficult 5 years a person can ever face, and for supplying joy to me in those years when all happiness had seemed lost to me. The hate grows as well though. The first time I truly hated Nintendo was when the announcement came that Final Fantasy VII was going to Playstation. I thought long and hard about what system to support, but in the end I chose Nintendo and rarely looked back on that decision. To do so would have proven me wrong, which I cannot accept. My love for Nintendo was too great. I became a silent fan of Nintendo for years in the N64 era. Most of my gaming needs came from the meager supply of PC Games that warranted playing. I hated Nintendo for letting the N64 be ridiculed, and for the total lack of games available for it. Perfect Dark and Zelda: Ocarina of Time were very good games, but I am not a fan of FPS games. I bought Perfect Dark for the simple reason that there weren't any better games available on the system. Throughout the N64 era I continued to buy games that weren't really my style. They were good games, but if the games available were anything like the ones available for SNES, I wouldn't have even touched the ones I bought. Whenever given the opportunity, I would throw my principles out the window and play the games on Playstation that I had been denied for so long. Games such as Final Fantasy VII and Parasite Eve became the holy grail of gaming for years. I played N64 while thinking of the PSX games that I knew were better. Yet whenever anyone challenged the N64, I would still step up to the plate, providing arguments like the better graphics on N64, and the few games that actually made the system worthwhile. When the GameCube came along, I knew I was saved. The console was literally everything the N64 was not. The 3rd parties started coming back, and the console was clearly ahead of anything that the PS2 could put out. The GameCube was simply the perfect console, and the love I felt for Nintendo finally started to resurface. It no longer felt that I was defending someone I didn't love for reasons that I could no longer fathom. However, much to my dismay, Sony's reputation in the PSX era saved their ass. People were willing to look past the PS2's dismal lineup and even more dismal outlook in favor of the brandname on the console. I knew what they were feeling, and I couldn't blame them, but there was nothing I could do about it. I watched Nintendo botch pretty much everything from that point in. They made the perfect console, but they failed to properly support it. Their advertising was shoddy, and they failed to address the "kiddy" argument against their console with any great deal of force. Nintendo's target demographic is one of all ages, but focused on the younger ones. They don't put excessive gore into their games just to boost the ratings, and they try to make thier games accessable to all ages. That's fine, but the problem is that their target demographic doesn't exist anymore, and they don't seem to realize that. The kids nowdays seem more concerned with not wanting to appear "kiddy" than having any real fun. Nintendo's ad campaign showing some fat guy wearing a giant stuffed costume is just going to drive people away! To be fair, they continued to regain their ties with the 3rd parties of old, and they even regained Square. The day I had put all my hopes and prayers into for 5 long years finally came true, and the memory was burned into my brain like a hot knife. Every day, I would check the gaming news to see if Square was back or not, and every day I was dissapointed until that day. At that point, it seemed like Nintendo could truly take the trophy back from Sony and once again become king of the hill. However, I watched it go downhill once more. Their games get delayed and delayed even more. Their TV commercials continue to be mocked, and the "kiddy" reputation doesn't seem to be going away, in spite of all odds. It's not really their fault that it's there, as GameCube does have just as much for adults as any other system, but Nintendo NEEDS to address this issue, and they just AREN'T doing that. About the only good thing I have to say about their current strategy is that they seem to recognize that a supply of good RPGs can really make a system shine. Dropping Rare, although it hurt like hell at the time was one of the smartest things I have seen them do in years, and also one of the bravest. They have done nothing but strengthen their RPG lineup with that money. They added 2 new 2nd parties specially for creating RPGs, and have done some miracle work with Square and Enix to get their games on their system. My biggest problem with Nintendo is that they have NO BALLS! The PS2 and even the lowly Xbox are starting to become seriosu threats, and Nintendo needs to start playing hardball to get back on top. Yet they continually plan their business strategy jsut as they have for the last 21 years, and refuse to take any big risks. About the only ballsy things I have seen them do lately are the new Zelda and the sale of Rare. MORE needs to be done. The gaming market is not forgiving to the losers, and if any serious competition comes to the GBA, Nintendo will be in big trouble. Anyways, I've said my piece. Any other fanboys wanna have a go? |

well, your right ninja, the point that n64 have better graphics than psx, the only problem is that it lacks good games, i was quite dissapointed that earthbound 64 was cancelled so as dinosaur planet which i waited for years. but dont worry ninja gamecube will surely be able to survive even their having their biggest threats (PS2 and XBOX) with its game almost all exclusive and i've heard that the new earthbound is gonna be continued on the cube, and dinosaur planet took the formation of starfox adventures.

Oh yeah. Don't get me started on the games. N64 was promised plenty of things in the beginning. We were supposed to get Earthbound, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and all that other nice stuff. There wasn't any reason why it couldn't continue the SNES's legacy, but it didn't happen. As time went on, more promises were made as the old ones were broken. Near the end, we were promised Eternal Darkness, Dinosaur Planet, Resident Evil 0 and 4, and they were all cancelled and shipped off to the GameCube. (Mind you, I am not all that displeased with Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil 0 as they stand). But damnit, if I wasn't a freaking fanboy, I would have a PS2. Sony's promises are starting to come true, while Nintendo is still playing catch up. I want to play Xenosaga quite badly, and I want to play Breath of Fire V and Dragon Quest VIII too. I am PISSED RIGHT OFF because Sony is STILL getting the major RPGs. All I have to say is that this Megaton announcement had better contain a lot of RPG content, or I am going to be one unhappy fanboy. I still believe that GameCube is the best, and I still believe that it will definately be the best of the 3 to own, but it could be SO MUCH more, and Nintendo just isn't supporting it as much as they should be. |

thats the problem, PSX is getting that attention because it sony, it is the leading brand in technology whenever it is a console or not, that is why many supports the PSX, its also the same with xbox, microsoft at their back, while nintendo is only a console and supporters arent that much.

Nintendo used to be world renowned. Mario is still more recognizable than Mickey Mouse. When uneducated people talk about consoles, they still call them all Nintendos. That's a pretty big sign of the power that Nintendo once wielded. But that power is decaying to the point that these days most people see Nintendo as the weakest link. It seems that these days only the hardcore gamers actually know what Nintendo is capable of, and that their games aren't "kiddie". The message needs to be given to the general population.

yeah i guess your right again, it is very sad to remember that the powerful nes during the old times is just now considered the lamest among the 3 consoles. but thats their faith, and maybe this is the good time to give chances to other consoles to experience being the most powerful.

I don't really understand fanboyism. I've just always bought the consoles that I thought gave me the biggest amount of options, and hopefully the greatest amount of quality titles. Those consoles were the NES, the SNES, the gameboy and the PSX (I later bought both N64 and Genesis, but well after their prime and used for very cheap). I'm yet to be disappointed and I don't regret my console buying decisions. If I were to buy a NextGen console now I would buy a PS2 (Gamecube would be a very close 2nd). I would certainly not consider myself to be a Sony "fanboy", but I think they make good products and they've yet to disappoint me.

Ninja, you never talk about the Gameboy or Gameboy advance; why's that? Because IMO that's Nintendo's strongest point.... they absolutely RULE on the handheld gaming market. I had expected a fanboy to talk about those as well ![]() as for me, I'm not really super brand-loyal, but if a company delivers good stuff I'm more tempted to buy something from them again and not from others. You could say I'm an MSX-fanboy, but thats more a nostalgia thing. allthough if a successor to the MSX were to come out I would probably be a supporter for it ![]() I'm also a bit of a fan of certain game companies, like Konami, Sega, EA, Empire Interactive (actually they're a publisher and dont develop games themselves, but they tend to distribute what I like, even though their cd's tend to not work sometimes), Codemasters and Digital Illusions |

Well, where Tokimemo goes, I go. Looks like the last time a Tokimemo game graced a Nintendo console was its SFC version. Since then, they've been Sony-exclusive, so I guess you can deduce from that statement what kind of console fanboy I am. ![]() [edit] I stand corrected... last Tokimemo Nintendo game was the GBC versions. Not that anyone cares though, but the fanboy in me demands it to be said.

I hope it will be a new... Like Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. They didn't port, they made a new one (and it was great). There is a chance for Tokimeki too

New game? I wonder how it would digress from the standard study-date-study-sleep-date-study format though...

mmm...i'm to divided between ps2 and ngc to be a fanboy, but i'll say want i wanted to say:yes, the gbc and gba where absolute the best handheld, not just because of the games but also because of the handheld itself, anyway, since pokémon showed up (yes,i love the poké games )the "kiddy image" came even closer, but gbc had many good games, but when i look at the gba arsenal, then i really goto say they got lots more games then gbc,and the graphs. are better, anyway, seems that every gaming industry has a couple of gba games, and i believe that ,that way nintendo will get more friends for making new ngc games...anyway,hope this made any sense

Err.....what does anonomous mean? ![]() I say, it is better to be a hardware freak than a console fanboy. If you ask me about which console I support most, well; it is never the same. The first 2-3 years of a new generation is ruled by consoles, but later the PC serves as the best gaming platform. And because of this reason, I find it quite hard to be a fanboy. But I can claim to be a fanboy, if not restricted to consoles, and talk related to games and game series. I am really stubborn when I am asked to state a game which I really like. If you exclude the current generation, then there are very few CONSOLE games that interest me. The funny thing is, I forget the games I didn't like ![]() My favourite console, however, will be the Playstation one. It has the original RE, RE2, RE3, Smackdown 1 & 2, Wrestlemania the arcade game, Twisted metal series and a few other that I forget. And now, I find the PS2 to be a good sequel. However, GC STILL HAS RE

GAK! See, now this is the stuff I hate. http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories...900888,00.html This game (PTO2), was one of my favorites on SNES. Samor, I own a GameBoy Advance, but I rarely buy games for it or really pay attention to it. I bought one the day that I heard Square was coming back, as I was anticipating SNES ports of Chrono Trigger, FF6, and the new Final Fantasy Tactics. I wanted them really bad. Before that, the only GameBoy games that had ever really interested me was Pokemon. As a result, the only GameBoy games that I play are Advance Wars and Pokemon Red.

Well, here is my story: Since i was in Grade 1, Dad bought me an Atari 7000 ( wrong number i guess) and i became facinated by it. It was my entery to the video games world. Later on , I got an NES and a Master system all together,. I still can remmeber the sweet memories of playing Mario and Sonic, however, I tend to go for Sega's games. Sonic was always ( and until now) my favorite game. 4 years later, and i got my hands on my Game Gear and a on my Sega Genesis. I was obviously turning into a loyal Sega fanboy. I used to argue that Genesis was the better console and Game Gear was the best portible console. As a matter of fact, I was arguing with Kane a month ago that my GG is still better than the GBA. The GG was always the hand held console that i liked. I even clean it everyday and kiss it good-night before i sleep ![]() After that came the sega saturn, but i was forced to get a psx instead, I saw the Saturn die infront of my eyes, so all i had to do is rent it instead. Nevertheless, the psx didnt fail to impress me with its games, Parasite Eve , RE series and Megaman Legends were my favorite, but nothing can fill the emptyness Sega had in my heart When the dreamcast came, I still had faith in Sega, and i still knew that they release good products. I didnt hesitate and got my console. It was my Dream console that i was looking forward to play with. I cannot remove Resident Evil Code: Veronica from my head until now, that game was one of the best. Unreal Tornamnent, Virtual Striker, SNK vs Capcom, Crazy taxi and so much more....but alas, sega was in debt and had to give it up. It was a sad day in my life, 3 years of complete joy ended like that However, Despite all these changes, Sega is coming back on its feet, and everyday i see the new sega's games on the next generation consoles ( PS2, GC and Xbox) , i always feel that sega will release a console someday. yeah, someday they will, I am quite sure if that, Sega , along with nintendo, is one of the best, and it will always be like that....
