Dunno how many of you played the board game but Megamek is a really good conversion. It's in java, has on-line support, a rudimentary AI, full lvl 1 rules and a large chunk of the lvl 2 rules. It's a good diversion especially if you're really into battletech.

It's more a matter of either playing via a LAN or just finding someone else on a mb or in IRC. Whoever's hosting provides their IP address then anyone knowing it can join, barring incorrectly setup routers and firewalls of death.
