Max Payne Sound problems
I recently found max payne (pc) for $15, so I bought it. The problem is that the sound effects in the game are extremely quiet. I have tried turning the sound up in the options menu in the game, but it does not help much. I also experience sound crackling, and sometimes the sound becomes loud. The background music and comic book style cutscenes sound fine. Thx for the help.

I don't really think it is my sound card specifically. I think I have traced the problems to a force installation of aureal a3d 2.0 drivers that I did along time ago. I wanted to use the aureal sound option on half-life, so I installed the drivers. When I tried to use the aureal a3d sound mode in half-life, all sounds were very faint, so I turned it off. For some reason, I think Max Payne is using a3d, but I do not know how to uninstall a3d or stop the game from using it.

New theory: Aureal A3D does not seem to be the problem (I deleted the a3d files from the windows/system folder and I still had problems with the sound). From some experimenting, I believe that max payne is using my soundcards right and left channels as if they were rear speakers in a 4 speaker setup. The problem? ---> my soundcard only supports two channel stereo; it cannot do anymore than two speakers. Now I must find out if I can fix this or if I should buy a new soundcard. Anyone know a cheapo soundcard I could buy? I'm thinking about the SB Live! Value card.

hmm
Sound Blaster is a good company...but i wouldnt recomend a really expensive one..because ive had this POS sound card that came with my computer that was a modem/audio card combo thing that came with it and ive been fine for a long time with it...even with max payne...if you really dont want to get new sound card you could try sound settings and it might do something or contact the support people at godgames...or whoever made Max payne (i think it was godgames wasnt it?)

Captain, check in your Multimedia Control Panel. Make sure that your computer is set up to use 2 speakers rather than 4. Also, make sure that you have your speakers plugged into the right port on your sound card. It's possible you could be using the line-out port, which would cause the symptoms you described. And just to be sure, make sure that you have selected plain old stereo sound in the Max Payne options menu. (If there is such an option.) Oh, and I wouldn't really dissuade you from buying a Soundblaster Live! I have one, and it's a very nice and reliable card. |

I found the problem! I looked in the software uninstallation part in the control panel and found that, for some reason, I had drivers installed for a creative pci sound card (which I do not have) along with the drivers for my rockwell sound card. I unistalled the drivers for the creative sound card and now everything works fine. Max Payne sounds great!
