Talking Dragon Quest VIII for PS2

It's being developed by Level-5, the same people responsible for Sony's Dark Chronicle and Microsoft's True Fantasy Live Online. The company had previously been working with Heartbeat on the last few Dragon Quest games, but Heartbeat went out of business a few months ago. Yuuji Horii will once again be responsible for the scenario and game design, Akira Toriyama will be the character designer and Kouichi Sugiyama will compose the soundtrack. Like previous Level-5 creations, the game will have a comic feel to it, created through toon shading techniques. Dragon Quest VIII has yet to receive a release date or pricing, although Enix previously had mentioned that the game will be released sometime in 2004.

DAMNIT!

Well, there it goes.... It's official. I guess you really can give the RPG crown to the PS2 now. I am still curious about the 3 games Enix has going to GameCube though.

Maybe next generation.

God no. I would take the PS2 over the Xbox any day. I had just held some small shred of hope that DQ8 would come to GameCube. Doing so would have forced the Japanese to accept the GameCube as superior to the PS2 in the RPG department. It would have been a really great battle to see.

But alas, that hope is gone.

Syed, Cel Shading is PERFECT for RPGs, and Dragon Quest fits the bill perfectly as well. You would understand if you had played some of the earlier Dragon Quest games.

DQ VIII looks nice. I hope it makes it over here to the 'States'. Also BOF 5 was mentioned, is that out yet for PS2 or is it, too, still in developement? I ask because I am a BIG fan of the BOF series and I have all the current ones. 1 and 2 for the SNES and 3 and 4 for the PSX. Finally, does anyone know if Pac Man World 2 is only for the Game Cube or is it also for the PS2 as well.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

sxamiga, I have heard that the new BOF game is a dissapointment to fans. I haven't palyed it myself though, so I can't say much about it. I think it's only out in Japan at present.

I am not sure about Pac Man Worl 2, as I barely knew it was on GameCube.

Star Ocean 3 is not cel-shaded, although I think it has very nicely done anime style ingame models. I don't like the look of BoF5 at all (the horribly super deformed characters look really bad, IMO)... and other elements of gameplay seem to have been wrecked. It's just as well, because if you ask me the BoF series has been gradually going downhill since BoF3. Yet another RPG series that had a lot of potential for continuity threw all connections out the door starting with 4, just like Seiken Densetsu did.

And about DQ8.. it looks pretty promising, but honestly I think the "modern" DQ games are mediocre, and everyone I've talked to who has played Dragon Warrior 7 has either barely tolerated it or outright hated it (and yes, these are all serious gamers/RPG fans who typically like the same games other people who enjoy the genre like). I can't fathom why this game was so immensely popular in Japan, it doesn't make any sense to me at all. I suspect it all has to do with nostalgia highs.

The game looks...like a very old anime. If that's an in-game screeshot, then I might just want to see it in motion. For some reason, it looks like an old 1st-person RPG on the PC I always thought BOF5 would be bad. I only tried BOF4 and I didn't like it much. Is Star Ocean 3 out?

hm. yes, cell shading can be very nice, but the current hardware (especially the ps2) isnt powerful enough to make it really shine, IMO.
btw, this stuff looks kinda weird. is it partial sprite/partial cell shading or something?

Most overlooked DQ7 because it didn't look as graphically appealing as other RPG's released....but beneath the crappy exterior was some great RPG goodness, stragetic battles, great 100+ hour story, and engaging yet not frustrating puzzles.....
Hopefully this new look will garner more DQ fans outside of Japan...we like Toriyama's artwork anyways...

Yes, we agre... erm I agree with Dark Watcher. DQ8 could really be a great comeback for Dragon Quest outside of Japan.
