How does FFMQ fit into the FF series? It's quite different from all the previous ones, so how come SS decided to change their format?

They knew that with the SNES, they were going to be attracting a new market. They made Final Fantasy Mystic Quest as an introductory game for people who had never played an RPG or a Final Fantasy game before.

The problem was that they ported FF4 to English before FFMQ.

That's no good, is it? It reminds me of the Super Mario Bros. equivalent of Mario is Missing, even though the latter was made by The Software Toolworks (ok, ok... it's a complete spinoff of the original SMB genre). If the ESBR had existed back then I'm sure that they rate it the following:

Bah, I'm sorry. I only played FFMQ until recently and was horribly disappointed. The storyline wasn't enough for me to keep on playing. I do think that it is a great introductory game to the RPG genre. Anyway, sorry for going off topic or being too critical.

I tried to play the first final fantasy some months ago, but it was so hard compared to other rpg's, and the dialog between characters were so short and slow that I couldn't keep playing it. Should I try to finish it?

No Syed, I still shake my head everytime I think about you.

FinalBuster, just make some sort of button hitting device when buying potions in FF1, and you'll be fine. It starts out kind of hard, but gets easier as time goes on. (Then gets way harder all of a sudden). It's seriously worth all of it though, as it is a really good game.

Well if it is age you are interested in, I voted and I'm 50 years old. That would have made me 38 when I played, enjoyed, and beat FF 1 in 1990.
As for FFMQ, I found it enjoyable but rather easy, my son played it also and was determined to finish it, but other than that, he said he found it quite boring.
Finalbuster, I would reccomend that you hang in there with FF1. The ending part (Final Dungeon) is worth it. But of course that is just my opinion, it is up to you.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

Even if FF7 wasn't technically the first FF that alot of people played, it's probably the first one that alot of people heard about. Alot of people had heard about FF games, but FF7 is the one that drew them in. It advertised a hell of alot, more than any other FF game I've ever seen. It really made the series mainstream.

Oh yeah, I remember the US commerical for FF7 was like... "Over 2 years in the making, millions of dollars... they said this movie couldn't be done. They were right." And they kept on flashing between the texts and the FMV clips. Pretty cool.

First RPG: Lufia Dutch Version (for international: Lufia 2 Rise of the sinistrals) On the SNES.
After that period my cousin got a PSX, and immediately he bought FF VII, 'cause it's Lufia, but 10 times better!! And he was right!!

Actually FFMQ was like an insult to other then Japanese gamers... Square came across the presumption that we as gamers could not handle the depth of their RPGs....The result created 2 games...FFMQ which was suppose to be for beginners...then a toned down version of FF4 called FF2 in the US.....funny thing is in Japan they were released af Final Fantasy USA for FFMQ and Final Fantasy Easy Type for our FF2....
