Final Fanyasy VIII PC Re-release
If someone can read nihongo better than I, could they decypher what this site says about it.
RPGFan says that there are no real changes, but it might signify Square releaseing stuff in the PC market again, which migh mean we'd see FFX and FFXII make thier way to the PC....

More likely it's Square's version of "Playstation the Best" releases.
You may be right, LK... this could mean Square's renewed interest in the PC platform (prolly due to FFXI's online format).

FF11 is definitely making its way to PC, as for FF10, I don't really hope it to happen.
Well, why does they release FF8 PC version again?

Probs just a platinum release. I'd like them to renew faith in the PC market so that I don't have to rely on emu's. Plaing it on the console just seems a bit of a hassle......

I think they do this just to milk cash for FF PC series before FFXI come out on PC.
When FFX came out, ppl at Square were sayin' that since they lost profit on PC version of games, they decided not to port FFX. But that could change, considering how Konami is focusing on PC market nowadays.

I think the real reason they lost money was two reasons:
a) The ports were shabby (The FF7 MDECs looked so crappy, and the music in both games was poor even in comparison to the PSX) b) The Games looked quie poor in comparison to games that were on the PC at the time. PC Gamers today would want MP3 music, movies at least on a par with FF8 (now that was a good idea, using the bink codec), and graphics taht look half decent on an average spec machine. Hi res fonts just don't cut it. We need higher avaliable resoloutions (up to at lease 1280x1024), if they have to use 2d backdrops, at least filter them using a half decent algorithm. They should also have better used the D3D API, rather than trying what they did. The API is there for a reason. FFX, looking like it does on the PS2, with the possibility of higher resoloutions might appeal far more to PC gamers. If they weren't too lazy, some of the 'framebufer' style effects could be done using DX 8 shaders.

Final Fantasy ports were extraordinally poorly done. They just couldn't seem to grasp that they were porting to a PC, and not a console. They also didn't seem to realize that PC gamers are not happy with console level graphics. You are completely right in every way Lord Kane.
Nevertheless, I am a whore, and no matter how crappy the port, I would probably still buy FFX PC, simply to show interest in the market. (Same as I did with FF7, and FF8) |

The concept of Final Fantasy is for a single player, party adventure to tell a story. First off I'm a huge hater of online gaming (meaning games that can ONLY be played only), especially on a console where you'd definitely have to subscribe and keep on paying to enjoy indefinitely. But also, having the game online destroys the concept of Final Fantasy. If Square wanted to release an online RPG, they should have dropped the FF title and called it something else. They're just using the FF name to milk the market.

Square are already starting to come back into force. FFX was a masterpiece. Although not quite back up to FF6/7 standard, it's a step in the right direction. By most accounts, Kingdom Hearts ain't too shabby either.
We've heard the rumours about Chrono Break. There is a trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2, FFXI may just be a blip (it has been in development for quite a long time now, IIRC the FF Online project was started before FFX, as there is so much more to write for an online RPG, more variables, etc...), there is also FF Chystal Chonicles on the GC due, FF Tactics Advance (FF Tactics 2 really, it's not just remake), and a Seiken Densetsu title. Yes they are milking their franchises, but wouldn't you? The FF Movie made such a loss, they have to spread the FF name around so as to get noticed.

If Square does come back in force. And actually releases decent PC Ports. I may be convinced into buying a PS2. Because some of the games they are releasing looks nice.
I really enjoyed Chrono Cross. I think its up there with one of my favorite RPGS, chrono trigger was one of my favorites too. But I was sorely disapointed with the rest maybe sometime I should play through FF9... But gawd its so difficult for me to play that one

Rest assure. SQ is coming back (the spirit). If they continue like this, I guess we can play masterpiece that can be compare to Chrono Trigger or FF7 in the future.
