I agree that the quality of other companies' FMV, like Capcom, Konami, Namco, etc are as good as Squaresoft, but Square's are still far superior. Why? Cause they have that amazing quality but also their FMV's are VERRRYY long... much longer than competitor's fully CG FMV's.

hmmm.... Have you seen the new intro for Resident Evil on GameCube? It's quite good, and also pretty long. But overall, I guess you are right. Square does seem to pack in a lot of FMV in their games. Contrary to you though, I would consider that a drawback rather than an advantage. I really do prefer cinematics to FMV. |

Eh, I never said it was an advantage... I just said that it was quite impressive. I definitely don't think CG is essential to a game, and I really don't think that FMV makes or breaks a game. I'm kinda neutral on CG FMV... if done right, and in moderation it can add to a game, but if it gets too overblown it can take away.

In which case, Xenosage will probs not appeal. There is an FMV sequence in it that lasts 25-30 minutes.

Surprising, because Xenogears used almost no FMV. It had huge amount of story-telling cinema scenes, but all done within the flow of the game using the game engine, and I found this to be much cooler and more smooth flowing. While it did have the anime cutscenes they were very few and very far between. I think this is one of the reasons it was overshadowed by its contemporaries, FF8 and Parasite Eve... silly people care too much about the CG FMV eye candy.

Yes Xenogears whooped the A$$ of FF, but I don't feel that FF X suffered due to everuse of FMV, it was more that the Hero's 'problem' was too unreal.

Lord Kane.... ****XENOGEARS DISC 1 SPOILERS AHEAD (like 50 hours into the game)**** I didn't mind the FMV in Xenogears so much. It blended quite well with the gameplay. (The scene in the forest at the beginning of the game is an exception). What I am referring to is the destruction of Solaris. There was quite a bit of FMV in that scene, yet it didn't bother me because the regular graphics don't really look all that different. Solaris coming down I think was better shown as an FMV than as a cinematic actually. It showed a lot more detail, and on an event like that, you pretty much need it. ****CHRONO TRIGGER SPOILER**** When Zeal Kingdom came down in Chrono Trigger, I have actually always wanted to see that in FMV form. I know it's kind of stupid, considering my stance on FMV. It's not that I don't like FMV, it's just that I think it's way too overused in a lot of games. (Final Fantasy mainly). |

No doubt about it. Squaresoft's FMVs are to FF style IMHO. In the other hand and specificaly speaking I like the most RE's FMVs, they show the lights & shadows effects amazingly, just the way I like. I meant that squaresoft had a huge graphical development resourse arsenal, remember that they are going to make a special CG for "The Matrix" IIRC. Capcom and Konami are as you say behind squaresoft's neck, it's just matter of tastes . I'd like to see something like FF the spirits within made by Capcom or Konami, what do you think

Talking about FMVs, anyone want to express their opinions about Silent Hill2's FMVs? IMO they are much much better than FFX's. Also Onimusha2's FMVs are there with the top.

if I'm not wrong you had to keep pressing down if you want the thing to take you down, don't jump or anything, just press down until you get to the place you want... I may not be right so try it and tell me... I'll see if I can find the solution if this doesn't work...
