CT is hands down a masterpiece, truly the pinnacle of RPGs. That game made me crazy about RPGs (more so than FF6). Now if only square and/or enix could join forces again for a similar breakout game...

Chrono Trigger, of course. IMO, it's lightyears away from FF6. Why? well, i think FF6 is just too simple; i really liked it in the beginning but, by the time i got to the flying island or something i got bored. The game lacks more mystery and human drama, and i sincerely don't know why so many people hold this game in such high esteem. Maybe they're just nostalgic...

I think FF6, hands down. I think it's Square's greatest masterpiece... amazingly deep and detailed world, both pre and post apocalyptic. I loved the characters, and it was very rare in that there's no main character at all, there are quite a few playable characters, but they're all developed. Terra, Celes, Locke, Edgar, Cyan, and much more... they all get their chance to shine at different times throughout the game. Graphics, special effects, and battle system definitely go to CT, it was so much FUN and great to play or even watch... But for me, the music and artistic style of FF6 (it was a beautifully designed game, even if the graphics weren't as good as CT) outclass CT, and the plot does as well. And then the villain, Kefka was probably one of the most evil villains in a video game. Constantly deceiving and betraying and killing anyone who got in his way on his climb to the top. Plus he was just plain psychotic.

I also think age makes a difference in this vote... if I was a few years younger I wouldn't have appreciated FF6 at the time it came out and probably would have liked CT more. I know amongst my friends, those of us in the 20something age group prefer FF6, while those 20 and under would go for CT.

i prefer ff6 because of the story music and a few other factors, and i liked ff6's graphics a lot more than ct's, they had more of a classical look to them, and ff6 had enough characters not to feel like it was a set group of people you play through the game but enough to have variety while not going overboard like chrono cross... and each one was a unique character, except maybe umaro gau relm and the mimic, but who cares about those guys when theres complete storylines for celes terra locke sabin edgar and many others... ive no idea why ppl love ct's graphics so much, imo those are overrated, i guess its just because they look cartoonish and most ppl who first played ct were pretty young... well thats my opinion

Super mario RPG????????!?!?!?!??! Well, doesn't matter, the thing is imo people overrate FF6 because it's the last of Snes FF's, and they tend to think that the PSX/PS2 ones are just a show of new age technology, which is true about FF8/9 (i havent played X so i can't say my opinion of it), but, what bad things do you see in FF7 to rate it below FF6?!?!?!?!? I just plain don't understand it.... Err... this was about Chrono Trigger also, wasnt it?

I have to go with Chrono Trigger. It excelled in almost every department. The graphics were superbly done (it was anime, in the style of DBZ), the music was excellent and fitting for every situation, the characters were unique (unique personality, unique abilities) and the battle system was the most innovative one I've seen (IMO only Grandia has a superior battle system). The double and triple-tech attacks were a brilliant idea and brought a whole new level of gameplay to the table. The game was also very dramatic, much more so than FF6. Like when you're approaching Magus and the fire lights as he chants, or the eery music in the magical kingdom Zeal and the underwater palace, foretelling a terrible event (the main character's death). The scene with Chrono and Marle at the top of death peak after he's brought back was also very dramatic, as well as the telling of Frog's tragic past. The game was also very challenging, unlike most of the FF games. The plot was somewhat confusing though (time travel always is) and I don't think everything was fully explained (it was later covered in CC).

FF6 was also a great game but there were some things I didn't like about it. I didn't much like the graphics. They just didn't seem to "fit" the game, so to speak, and some of the scenarios were just too weird, such as the fight scene while falling down a waterfall (fighting fish of all things) and the battle with the phantom train. The game was also a bit too easy, especially Kefka. That sissy went down in less than 2 rounds, and most of the other bosses can be cheaped (using Thunder Rod against TunnerArmr, Phoenixdown against the Phantom Train and the ever popular vanish + doom/x-zone trick). The game also had some errors, particularly Relm's sketch ability (some graphical glitch), which can sometimes crash the game or erase the saved games altogether! However, I don't think FF6 was really about the game, but about people. The game dealt with many serious real-life issues, such as love, acceptance, hope, etc. The characters all had some personal issues to deal with. It shows the will of people, struggling to survive in a harsh and cruel world, even after the destruction of the world (how they strive to live, to rebuild their shattered towns, never giving up hope).

I've played both game multiple times (CT a LOT more) and have enjoyed them both, but overall I enjoyed CT more. It was an excellent game in every aspect and had a lot of replay value. FF6 had a much deeper plot and character development and despite its minor flaws it was a very good game.

i thought ff6 was more dramatic though, i dont recall that many dramatic parts in ct but i still can remember the scene with locke and his dead wife or girlfriend rachel, and the cid part was pretty sad too, i think one of the most dramatic parts in ct was when/if lucca's mother's legs were chopped off by that machine, while in ff6 that part i already mentioned, but the part in ff6 had a bigger impact on me... well, i can discuss this all day but lets all just agree that both games are very good and memorable

Bah! They are both incredible games and all have good and bad points about them. Currently I am playing FF 4 the most. I htink it's just as good as CT and all the other Square games.

The FF3 battles are just simple, same of the characters, instead in CT you can run, you can push, make many different things, but i prefer FF3 cause of the story and cause of the espers and some guys skills like gau and sabin

Hmm... as far as difficulty goes, I found CT far easier than FF6. I rented CT and beat it in the 2 days I had it with no problem... of course I liked the game so much that I bought it anyway. FF6 can be tricky at times, especially if you don't purposefully level up or earn esper spells. As far as artwork goes, I don't see a huge difference in quality, but rather in style. CT is anime-style all the way. The characters are designed and drawn by Akira Toriyama (DB, DBZ). FF6 has a very industrial, and dirty and gritty feel to it, and the drawing is more reminiscent of western style drawings. The characters are older, and are drawn to look and feel older than those of CT.

Also it was asked what bad things are there about FF7 that make it worse than FF6. It's not bad things at all. I love FF7, and it's probably my second favorite game. It's not bad things in FF7 that make FF7 worse, but in my opinion to me it's good things in FF6 that make FF6 better.

Really?
Although i voted for CT, i would say that ff6 had a deeper plot, just cuz of the lack of a true main character

One of the things that i didn't enjoy in FF6 was the whole way you taught your characters magic. When I play an RPG for some reason i just have to feel like each character has set abilities or roles in my party (i.e a healer, or black mage, or a knight). It was like this in CT but in FF6 you could teach anyone anything or indeed everything and ultimately make them demi gods. I know there was emulation patch that changed this, but thats not the point.
FF7 was like this to a certain extent but the materia slots dealt withthe issue better.

I agree with Alchemyst. One thing that FF6 lack is techniques. The battle might not be much fun compared to Chrono Trigger. And the magic learning system is somewhat slow things down. But none the less, I thinks FF6 has better storyline. Actually, both of them are quite good. I would go for both if you ask for Square's RPG.

I thought that Chrono trigger had the deeper plot. The whole time travel thing got very complex, and some of the stuff that happened was simply a masterpiece.
