Super Mario Sunshine

Well, today's the day. It's 5AM right now, so I will get some sleep, then I will go to Toys 'R Us, and pick up my copy of Super Mario Sunshine. I probably won't get a chance to play it until evening though, so I can't post my review for about another 20 hours, if anyone is waiting for it. I need to look for a place to live shortly, or else I will be living on the street. I don't really like that prospect much, so I guess I have to look into that as well as pick up my Mario game. What really sucks is that I can't play Mario while I look for a place to live.

While I was waiting though, I rented Beach Spikers yesterday. The game simply rules. There are a whole bunch of hot volleyball players jumping around, and you can even make your own players!!!! Woot! I made myself two Japanese chicks with green and pink hair. They are very good looking, and now they kick butt.

Ninja giving a Mario game a review. I just can't wait

A Nintendo Fanboy's review of Nintendo's major mascot just can't be negative

Of course they did, otherwise there would have been some rush in the local hospitals

Well I have played what I believe is the a demo at Electronics Boutique the other day and I thought it was amazing. The graphics were rough around the edges and I coudln't figure out how to do the but stomp so I could'nt beat the first boss, but the animation is sweet. I loved sliding around in the goo and getting Mario's uniform all messed. It reminded me of why I play games in the first place.

Umm... in case you have been living in a cave on mars with your eyes closed and fingers in your ears, super mario sunshine is the latest, and greatest mario game to be released. It is only on Nintendo Gamecube, and has mario sporting a water shooting pack on his back.

Yeah I heard that this game is about something like anti-pollution Mario. He uses the water pack for cleaninig. Looks cool and cute.

Well, I have found a place to live, and I have Shine Gotten 14 times today. I also painted the floor of the laundry room, and took a bunch of garbage to the dump. Not a bad day's work I don't think.

But to the point, Mario Sunshine rules. It is well worthy of the title Mario.

But first, the bad things. This Mario game seems to be the first to support an actual storyline. Just like the game itself, it is simple, and to the point. The intro sequence is a little boring, but it gets the point across, and once its out of the way, its smooth sailing. But one other thing worth mentioning is that the long jump used in Mario 64 is conspicuously absent. It might not seem like much since you have the hover nozzle, but it is a noticable loss.

The gameplay is top notch. I have completely finished the first level, aside from snagging all the blue coins, and I enjoyed it a lot. It's outwardly similar to Mario 64, but SO MUCH more fun. This game will definately be the new benchmark for platformers for years to come. Conker's Bad Fur Day can rest in peace, as the king of Platformers has returned.

The controls are simply excellent. I didn't know how the transition from N64 to GCN would be since the controller designs are so very different, but to my surprise, I was intuitively doing everything I did in Mario 64 in no time flat.

It's really the little things that make the game stand out. I have just sat around and fiddled with things a lot, and the game kept on surprising me with the things I could do. The sense of freedom that you get when playing the game is enormous. There are multiple ways of solving every problem, and you can go pretty much anywhere you like. For example, I have access to a total of 4 levels right now, even though I have only played two.

The graphics and sound are awesome. I really don't know why some people don't like the graphics, but it could be because of the blurriness. The island is very hot, and heat waves are continually distorting the picture, making distant objects seem very blurry. Myself, I love this effect, and it goes perfectly with the graphical style in the game. The water effects are stupendous, and it is most certainly the best water I have seen in a game yet. Water drips everywhere when you fire your water gun, and the lakes and ponds are terrific. The music is also great. In the special stages, they play a remixed version of the original SMB theme, and I love that too. It just adds a little flair to the game.

The feel of the game is distinctly modelled after Mario 64, and you can take that as a good thing or a bad thing. There is a Nintendo fanboy who works in Entertainment at my local Toys R Us, and he didn't seem to like that, but he had only played for about an hour before coming to work, so he might have gotten used to it by now. (He never even got his first shine yet). BUt regardless, Mario 64 was a great game, and Mario Sunshine does everything that Mario 64 did, but better.

I visited Blockbuster Video to return Beach Spikers, and I checked out Mario Sunshine while I was there. It was guaranteed to be in stock, but I was not surprised to note that every single copy had already been rented. (It was about 6 PM). Obviously I am not the only one who was waiting to play the game. I am definately not sorry that I bought the game, as it is very difficult, and from the looks of it, it is a pretty good size. It will keep me busy for quite some time I think.

BTW, My preliminary rating of the game is about 9.8, losing .2 marks for the crappy plot.

Quick comment @ Syed. Not everyone hates Mario.

http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.asp

It would seem that Nintendo mascots are doing quite well, although Samus might lose to Sephiroth. But it's a good sign that Mario beat out Cloud Strife. I NEVER thought that would happen.

Let's just hope that Samus can put Sephiroth in his place. Samus definately has looks on her side. She is quite nice to look at, while Sephiroth.... well...

Of course in the current vote, Link will kick Scorpion's butt. I can't see Link losing to Scorpion.

i still can't believe Megaman lost to the lights of sephiroth. sephiroth is one of the most stupidest character ever. scorpion should have come against megaman... that would have been better.

The results have surprised me so far. I had predicted something FAR different from what exists now. I just hope that Mario can win this one. Mario is the grandfather of ALL video game characters, so I can't imagine who would be better character to win this one.

I agree, Mario is a benchmark for platform (if not all) games and Miyamoto is a genius.
I don't know what it's like in other places but in England a little while ago they had a poll like this (run by an electronics store, i think) and er, Lara Croft won beating Crash Bandicoot into 2nd i think. Mario was like 4th, Sonic 9th and Pacman was there somewhere.

It don't take a genius to figure out why Lara won know does it?

arrgh! how did Sonic lose?! PRobably because samus has new nintendo games coming out... but ARRGH! i wish sega could've been up there in the top. OH well... at least crono rocked solid snake. hahahaha don't get me wrong, MGS is great, but CT is like a friggin legend.

[edit] shoot, on further inspection, nintendo is totally rocking the poll. I guess it proves that nintendo simply owns the word "franchise"
