I think it's a pretty interesting article. I know that I personally would not consider myself a "scrub" like the article describes, but I am really bad at most fighting games. But I KNOW I'm not playing to win... I'm a really non-competitive person and I don't really care if I lose or win. That's probably why I don't really like playing games online, since I don't really care about winning, hence I don't care about getting good enough to win. I still have fun playing fighting games sometimes though, even though I usually get the crap beaten outta me by my friends.

I usually play to win , allthough at a point you have to be realistic, especially if you know you lack skill in a game.
As for the cheap things. I agree things are too often called cheap, but our writer here also seems to believe that all fighting games are flawless and bugfree, which isn't the case.
Aside from that, I think he's making too much of a fuss about it.

I agree totally with the article.. But someone can be "not playing to win" and not be a scrub.. The real scrubs are the ones who thinks they are good but lose a lot.. Then they call your tactics cheap.. and start to ***** like a sore ass loser..

I've been playing Kaillera online for quite some time and believe me, I've run into my share of "scrubs"... When I play against someone who isn't playing to win, but doesn't talk smack, it's fine.. I just don't like scrubs who can't play worth crap, but likes to talk smack..

This one scrub in particular, called all my tactics cheap in MvC, and complained I did the same thing over and over... Wise up scrub, learn to counter or block my tactic and I may change it.. pff.. Then he said I suck because I only knew how to do one thing.. My reply? "you must suck even more because you fall for the same thing over and over".. hehe..

I have fun playing fighting games, especially nowadays with kaillera, but I know how to win too.. I don't call anyone cheap.. You just gotta find a way to beat different tactics, no matter how cheap they may seem.. A good player always will..

If any of you guys wants a match-up against me in SFA3 or MvC, be fore warned.. I am definately not a scrub.. Most people on Kaillera already know that..

I know I am no Scrub because I do any game moves to win.

If it's firing 10 firebals in a row or using the same moves over and over again, I use any game trick in the book to win.

See I guess that would make me a scrub. I prefer to enjoy the game for it's playability than for the pure win. In RTS games this can be brutal as well. The "play to win" type simply picks a race or class that provides a quick-build cheap unit early on (ie. Zerg) and exploits that heavily. Rushing is one of the most annoying, yet most unavoidable tactics in any RTS.

I guess in any genre you'll have this kind of thing.

wonder what's the writer's thinking..... some "cheap" tatics are really invincible, and should be told NOT to do beforehand what's the fun if you are only going to do the simple, winning moves and not trying to do the difficult (losing?) moves and try making them winning moves too?

"play to win" type using zerg? they must be crazy..... zerg is not that strong in the beginning, especially against terran which can make their cheap, early units die like crap

Yeah.. I think the author was mainly talking about fighting games.. Which is a win or lose situation.. There are cheaps, but I find most of em can be countered or avoided.. The last thing you can do is not play a cheap person.. I on the other hand love finding ways to beat them even when they are cheap.. Although I don't try to play cheap by any means to win, I do know how to do em..

I usually play fighting games to win. Although I frown upon cheap tactics I find with superior skill you can overcome them. A cheap player will always rely on one specific tactic to win but will usually be really weak in other areas (such as defense ). The kind of cheating I can't stand are the undocumented ones. Some games have things like infinite combos (Cyclops in xmen vs sf comes to mind) or infinite throws.

Hmmm, this sound more like the difference between casual and hardcore gaming to me

In Mortal Kombat 2 SNES, you could just use any character and jump and kick simoltaneously and your opponent could not respond with anything because it was just over the high attack area when it hit. Its not like the game designers do anything to prevent scrubs. Thats just cheap.
