Try Parasite Eve, it has real-time fighting where you can move around and dodge attacks. Grandia II also has a good battle system.

I agree, Grandia II has one of the most elaborate battle systems so far. Valkyrie Profile has a good battle system too.

Yeah like Demi said Parasite is a good one real-time playing, Grandia is another one and there are some games that are not really rpg where you can hit the guy when walking in the scenario, like legend of mana... there are many different styles you can choose

the Grandia series features an impressive battle system other than that I'll go for the tales series and also I found out the battle system at Saga Frontier to be quite fun.

Yeah, I think that's the hardest thing about RPG making these days... most of the releases that have been coming out have excellent graphics and sound, and pretty solid plot too. What makes or breaks the game is the battle system... too often battle systems get boring and tiresome over the course of a long RPG. I personally like the FF style, but it can get tiresome... I didn't really get tired of it in FF7, but in FF8 I got so annoyed cause there were far fewer enemies (enemies just levelled up with you and you saw the same enemies from the beginning of the game till the end) and you had to draw all the time... in FF9 I just thought random encounters happened too frequently - in dungeon areas I got attacked like every 2 steps - and I started going crazy by Disc 2 even... even slight variations make a big difference.

I really liked the fighting in Xenogears, cause it's fun to make the combos - and Gear fighting is a different strategy alltogether. Crono Cross kinda used the same style, but I think Xenogears was far simpler

No, Vagrant Story is for PSX. But with the modern wonder of ePSXe, you can play Vagrant Story on your PC anyway.

I am against turn-based-battle system too. The fighting system in PE is more like what I want. Like sometimes you want to just doge out instrad of fighting.

One thing that I thought is a flaw in Final Fantasy series is the usage of character's voices in battle. Lets compare two different scene in battles, let say, Final Fantasy 8 and Valkyrie Profile. Take the action of Squall's Lion Heart and Lenneth Nibelung Valesti Level 3, compare them both. Can you detect the main difference? Both moves are cool, but Lenneth beat Squall in term of creating battle atmosphere and heating up the mood, just because she has voices. "Divine assault, Nibelung Valesti!"

vagrant story's system is pretty good, but the only problem is that it sometimes becomes repetitive.

Have you try Brigandine? It's quite old, but I think it's neat. Well, at least I think it's better than Hoshigami.

So far to me best battling system was in Xenogears.
Very unique and refreshing (Characters + Gears).

Also Chrono Trigger was fun till the end, fighting and walking on the same field.

Must not forget about Final Fantasy V and Jobs management, also very entertaing and fun.
