Final Fantasy XI PC??

Is it true that there will be a PC version of Final Fantasy XI??
I heard this somewhere but didn't believe it since not even FF10 had a PC port.
Can somebody fill me in please?
Does anyone know when it will be released??

There should be a PC version. I heard they were testing the Windows version in Japan or something but I'm not sure. I can't think this late at night. ~_~

Yes, there is a Windows version in development. IT was announced years ago. But as per the usual Square PC port, you need god-like specs to actually run it.

But as for why you would want the game in the first place, I am at a total loss.

A P3 800 and a geforce card isn't godlike. Hell, that's the average requirements for most games these days anyways. Besides, you can still play FFXI on a 28.8 modem. A MMORPG on a 28.8 modem is pretty amazing if you ask me.

yeah, and the minimum specs for FF8 were a pentium 233, and a 16MB video card. (Don't quote me on that, that's just an educated guess.).

At any rate, my point is that their ports don't really have a good history. You usually need a much faster PC than the one in the minimum requirements to run their games.

Btw, you need a directx 8.1 compliant video card for FFXI. That means you need vertex and pixel shaders. Bad luck for GeForce2 and GeForce4 MX owners.

Speaking about the PC port of FFVIII - I've seen it. It is sooo awful (backgrounds are terrible; the world map seems to have 5 fps). I prefer the PSX emulated version.

If they optimized their ports a bit they'd run swell on even a low-end PC. Unfortunately in past Square ports they've simply done a direct translation. In FF8 they improved the FMVs a bit but that's it. They should have re-sampled the backgrounds at a higher resolution and optimized the world map for PC videocards - I don't think they used multi-texturing at all (they're psx graphics afterall), which don't take advantage multiple pipelines on modern videocards.

They will probably make it playable on fixed function videocards, otherwise they'll be excluding a large portion of the market (remember most pre-built PCs include a GeForce 2 MX or GeForce 4 MX and these are the ones that most people buy). They're probably only saying that just for compatibility (they'll probably include DX 8.1 with it). And, no offense to Square or anything but I doubt Square programmers are able to grasp the concept of shaders. They're very new and advanced technology and most PC developers haven't jumped on them yet. Judging from Square's past record anyways, I really doubt it. Let's see if Square can prove me wrong and actually produce a good PC game using the latest technologies.

Uh, just so ya know, I've got the PC versoin, and the map runs full speed on my machine. And that's with a (supposedly outdated) Voodoo3 2000!

Ok, fine. The secret to the speed is the rest of my system:
Pentium4 1.5Ghz
256megs of DDR-RAM
XG Sound card utilizing the Yamaha YMF744 chipset.

And, ironically, the Sound still skips when I use the hi-res FMV's. However, I believe its related to how my sound card does its hardware acceleration. Whenever I turn off the hardware buffer, it stops skipping, but I lose the EAX capability.

Speaking of EAX, those of you with SBLive! or higher cards that have FF8PC may be interested in a new EAX preset for use with FF8 (it's attached to my post). It tries to replicate the PSX's reverb routines used in FF8. It's made by the same guy (his name's Samuel Slight) who did the 45meg DLS file over at http://ffsf.cjb.net/.

In order to get it to work, you'll have to import the preset the way you'd import any other EAX Preset; then select it for use, then go to the config and uncheck the "Reverb" option for the music (the EAX preset is even applied to the BGMs, so you don't want the MS Synth applying its own reverb and messing everything up), and uncheck the EAX option, since otherwise the game'll still try to use the original EAX routines programmed into the game.

Can I just ask this, saves me making a new topic? What ever happened to the PC port for PSO anyway?

Why is my Geforce card not compatible with DirectX 8.1? It should work.... What difference does it make if it's MX or not?

Beta testing for FFXI PC is on-going in Japan right now. From what I've read, beta-testing is limited to people who have AT LEAST a Pentium4 and a 64MB video card (most likely GeForce3s are a minimum) and a fast internet connection.
