Battle Systems....

what kind do you prefer in RPG's? do you like the turn based style of Final Fantasy, the third person style of zelda games...or anyother style you can think of. i personaly like the FF style in RPGS. although the zelda style is also a welcome change too.:joice:

I loved battling in Ocarina of Time. The Z targeting system was pretty cool. It made fighting pretty easy though. But this way of fighting gives you more freedom of what you're doing.

FF battles are ok. But there is less freedom and you move around less. Even though the moves and spells look cooler most of the time. Oh well. I think I like the battles in Zelda games better.

I like games with action. I've fallen asleep way too many times fighting in FF games. And I'm not joking about that!

Heheh, yeah. That Zelda is gonna be fun. Link has that cute look about him. He's no 17 year old Link, but it should be ok.

I like the battle systems in Chrono Trigger and Grandia 2 the best. Even though it's still turn-based, there's constant action on the screen.

Yeah, that's like both of them put together. Parasite Eve too.

I like Grandia 2 and Parasite Eve's battle system the best. In those games you can run around the battleground and evade attacks (indirectly in Grandia 2) instead of everyone standing completely still as in the FF series.

Yeah, it's a lot better than just standing there getting hit.

Zelda isn't an RPG IMO.

Anyway, I would have to say that my favorites are Vagrant Story (upgraded PE system), Valkyrie Profile (RPG/Platformer cross. Very cool), and Chrono Trigger (turn based, but without a seperate combat screen)

Actually, I have always considered Zelda to be the very definition of an Adventure game. People calling it an RPG in recent times has royally screwed my convention for seperating Adventure and RPG genres. (Seiken Densetsu is an adventure too damnit! )

Well, Seiken Densetsu does have some RPG elements. You're right about Zelda though, it's an adventure game. However people have been calling it an RPG (or action-RPG) since the NES days, I guess because it has a medieval theme (swords and magic).

Yeah, seiken desnetsu has a party of people, different character classes, and lots of stats, and level building. both of those are classic RPG elements. Still, it plays a lot like an adventure game. Overall though, it does seem balanced in favor of the RPG genre.

Well Zelda games have kinda changed since the beginning. Even the battle styles have changed within the series. Compare Adventure of Link to Link to the Past. Big difference.

Grandia's battle system is pretty good. Though the enemies are a little too easy.

hmm battle systems huh.. well, theres no doubt theres a lot of good systems... ff7 probably started the 3d landscape battles, and those are still popular, but i myself dont like those that much, xenogears had a cool battle system with the deathblows, chrono trigger had a very good battle system... on the pc... Revenant had one of my favourite battle systems because it was live action and basically used 6 keys in according to directional keys... each key had a function like in a fighting game, when combined with other keys you could do various combos, but anyways, i think my favourite battle system has to be the fallout battle system, turn based rpg action at its best... oi, i've said the words battle system too many times here...
