past, present or future?

in a game which time setting to you prefer. This is really for any type of game but generally im asking for rpgs. i would have to definetly prefer future it lets the people makin the game use their minds and create a very nice looking world. Thats why i loved midgar just wish you could see more of it. In xenogears they kind of mixed them and in many games they do that. I dont exactly like when its in the future but everything is still like it was like 100 years ago today. So what do you people think.

I prefer a past setting for RPG's and a present setting for FPS. Didnt like futuristic games, and I dont suppose I will unless a really good one comes out.
BTW, I class games with a setting of our time with top secret fictional weapons Present.

I recently noticed that most past based RPGs didn't interest me anymore.
I didn't like FF9, and most of past based ones.
On the contrary,i liked FF8 that a lot of people dislikes.

I enjoy them all. I like the "medevil" themed ones, but I aso like futuristic one, if they are the right type. Have any of you ever played the Space Quest series fom Seirra? That is a fun series.
I guess my least favorite would be ones set in the present day. That is because we don't know exatally what the "dark ages" were like, nor do we know for sure what the future will be like. But we are living in today, so if a game is set in a "today" setting and isn't accurate, to me it is no fun.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

it all depends on the genre of the game.

rpg = past/future. the present bores me. (eg. ff series)
fps = present/future. the past bores me (eg. max payne, Unreal Tournament)
rts = future/past. the present bores me. (eg. starcraft)
adventure = future/past. the present bores me

Max payne is a HORRIBLE game. The only thing that saved it was the bullet time, from the matrix. Just look at the expression on his face...it looks like someone farted and he smelled it first!

I figure the setting doesn't matter as long as it is well used.

i'd say present with a hint of the future (most of the FF series... cept ff8... sorry raziel). But really, it mostly depends how the story makes use of the setting its in, if the game is set in the past, but cleverly uses it (ff tactics, vagrant story) then it rocks. There's lots of games that don't utilize settings well, making everything feel static.

it really doesn't matter to me, as long as it blends well with the story and the story is compelling, like some games like Arc The Lad or Tales of Destiny are in the past, but the story is good, or games like Wild Arms and FF 7,8, and 10 sense they are based in the future.

present games are very boring yes. But usually when you have a game that looks like its set in the past its really the future just that somthing happened to make them live like people from the 1600s or somthing that is quite *** i would have to say. Seeing what peoples ideas of what the future will be is very cool i mean ff7 the whole mako energy stuff was amazing. In ff8 it was the future and you could tell but then some towns looked like ****. I also like when games are set in like past and then they make contact with technology from the future that cool to.

i believe a perfect example of what you are talking about it Star Ocean 2 - Second Story, this game starts out in the future, but then something goes wrong and he is taken to another planet, and they are back in the day
