Only play FF8 if you have a gameshark so you can avoid the F***ing drawing. It's boring. Then..... either ff7/9

FF9. FF7 is also very good, but quite underchallenging. Also, both FF7 and FF8 use a system that eventually makes everyone the same. (Everyone can do everything). So by the end of the game, everyone is casting ultima or whatever. This really bothers me. FF9 only certain characters can learn certain skills, so the characters stay differentiated throughout the game. Also the gameplay reflects the story more because of this. Also FF9 does not have the (badly done) combination of tech and fantasy. Gunblade, yuch. (FF8). FF9 is also challenging enough to keep you awake in battles. Unlike FF7 and 8 (especially) where you can win almost any battle by just closing your eyes and hitting the "confirm" button. Basically, I think 9 is superior to 7 and 8. And it is beautiful on ePSXe with a good comp.
By the way, the sotries between these and most other FF's are entirely unrelated.

I say FF8.. It has the best Mdecs of those 3 games.. FF9 had some good ones too, but the ending of FF8 has to be seen.. It's amazing.. Plus, FF8 has the best limit breaks.. Squal's lion heart is cool.. Most people don't like the magic Draw system, but I like it..

Quasius: At the end of the game, everyone in FF8 can't have the same skills.. If you mean enhancement skills than yes(str 40% ect,ect..) but magic and moves? No.. You do have the option for magic skills though(skill items)..

Get FF7 first! Then 9, and If you really think you'll like it, get 8 I would suggest borrowing/renting it first, though, cause some people like it, some hate it. But definatly get 7 first.

I think FF9 is better than 7 in one aspect. I prefer the way that everyone is limited by thier class. I'd have prfered it it it was like the way Diablo does it TBH, where you have to fill certain criteria to use magic. Maybe a bit more advanced than that, say Aeris can use Restore at lever 7, wheras Barret has to wait until about level 12~15. That way, the characters are more specialised. Aeris needed to be weaker. maybe one or two of the other chars needed to be weaker too. But that's just my opinion. I can't play FF7 at the mo anyway, as my PSX copy was stolen, and I can no longer play the PC version.

I opt for FF7 as well. It was the last FF game to truly mesmerize me and kept me hooked 'til the end. FF8 and FF9 I played off and on and there was little to keep me motivated, possibly because I was spoiled by FF7. FF8 was too technological and kinda felt out of place (I mean with all that technology why use Gunblades and whips? Just use a laser gun or rocket launcher for cryin' out loud). FF9 was alright in its gameplay (it was much more balanced than the previous two games) but had a kiddy tone to it. The characters were all deformed and cute, as well as some of the monsters.

or Chronicles, and you'll get a nifty chrono trigger too!
but between the three, i'd probably get FF8, but i'd get the others soon after.
