Do you still play "da real thang?"

I was having some fun tonight *except when I was cleaning the carts* playing some NES games tonight. I wasn't trying to beat any of the games, except Super Mario Bros where I made it all the way to 8-4 just to get killed by a hammer brother right before Bowser, but I was having fun.

Now considering that there are some really great emulators for the Atari 2600, NES, SNES, etc, do you play any of the old games on their "native" system, or are you just playing emulation? (We just keep the old systems and games in a closet so we're legal right? Actually I keep a bunch in the closet when not in use! )

The game is stupidly hard at later stages. I have never beat it. Just like Zelda. Beating it without a walkthrough is a pain because all the maps look the same. Its confusing. I didnt know you had to blow up a random rock to get inside another dungeon. My friend had to do it for me.

I was lost for days -_-

The last time I had my old SNES out was over 2 years ago to play Mario All Stars and it was fabulous. I don't have any of my old consoles out any more due to me not wanting to clutter my entertainment area with more gear, so now a days I stick with emulation.

I still use my GBA SP, Saturn, Dreamcast... Yeah, those are the only ones.

Have a couple of Master Systems, a Mega Drive, etc. somewhere in the closet for some years now.

NES died years ago so... not that the cart connectors would work (since they are of low quality) but anyway. Still have a couple of famiclones in the closet though.

There's one upside to emulation of systems which use cartridge based media, no endless hours blowing into the cartridge or cleaning to get X game to work and keep X game from glitching while playing. That was one of the most annoying things for me when using these systems if not the most annoying.

Still play my NES from time to time. And I actually enjoy Mario more when it's on the actual NES regardless of whether I get to look at it in HD or use a 360 controller to play it or whatever... the game just feels better when it's on the NES, y' know?

Same thing goes for Megaman/Rockman games and Contra. I also play Galaxian and Battle City. And Duck Hunt, too. That's one game experience you can never get through emulation.

I thought the Mario All Stars shipped for $3.50 for people who purchased SNES systems was pure genius. I still think they should have considered a free $20 download card with the Wii, PS3, 360, and I will say for Europeans, getting 3 free downloads with the PSP Go was a very good idea, it wouldn't sell me a PSP Go, but I can see where it would for many gamers.

Yeah, the Zapper rocks on the NES, I'm glad I have 2, but I'm guessing there are no 2 player Zapper games for the NES?

setting up my old systems is too much hassle most of the time nowadays. and as much as i love my C64's, if i got them out to play in the front room dawn would kill me since "we don't have the space"

Dreamcast is now the oldest system I have. I happen to still use it (though a little less often than before), haven't really dived into the emulators for it a lot. So, when I want to play a DC game, I'll play it on the real deal. Same for PS2 games. For PS1 games, I sometimes use the PS2 but I also use emulation... probably 50/50.

If I can emulate, I do. That being said, I don't play anything older than PS2 games right now.

Original > emulation

I accept that emulation has some nice perks and I love it's here for preservation purposes. My gameboy had its best time and I enjoy playing those games on my PSP now. Still, I hate playing things on the PC while it was meant to be hooked up to a TV.

Actually, to me the question isn't emulation vs real deal, it's about desk versus bed

This

The oldest games that are memorable enough to be played constantly are from SNES (Chrono Trigger, but it's available for multiple platform nowadays) and Genesis (Sonic games, Landstalker and Phantasy Star IV). My old systems are just that, old. I keep them in the storage, and I kinda have this nagging feeling that my parents already threw them away (though last I checked it's still on the shelves where I put it). I don't plan on playing them on their original system because a bit too much of a hassle. I'm just being lazy is all

Ever heard of TV-Out? Very useful feature.

As for the topic, I emulate everything except of course current gen stuff. I don't really get an extra sense of nostalgia by playing the real consoles instead.

I don't have a TV, but that aside, I can still put out a long USB cable, that's true. Still it just doesn't feel the same as popping in the original disc in a console and switching on the thing, not being bothered by Windows Automatic updates and stuff like that. It just feels better picking a game from my collection rather than loading an image or selecting a ROM.

Pushing a cart in/slotting a disc in, and pressing the power button, those actions are far simpler than any emulator you can come up with. That's enough for original > emulation imo.

emu is near perfect enough for just about most things leading up to PSX/N64. The PS2 generation stuff I'll still often have to use the old consoles because the emus aren't 100% yet. But, for most everything prior to that generation, emulation is fine and almost always better. No point in using the old consoles really IMO.
