I guess I'll just come out and say it. The Wii outsells the PS3 and the 360 for 2 reasons:

1.) It's cheap.

2.) It caters to a different audience.

The second reason is the bigger reason why it sells so well and why you can't really compare it to a "traditional" console. While the Wii has titles that cater to hardcore gamers, it has far more titles that cater to casual gamers. Nintendo even has admitted to doing things differently by marketing the Wii to the "yet untapped" casual gamer market.

Nintendo moves a lot of Wii units, but game sales are laughable. It seems like the only time a Wii game is in the top 10 games sales-wise, it's a first party A-rated title (Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, SSBB, etc.). When claims are made that most people only buy the Wii for Wii Sports, play it to death and then let the console collect dust, the sales numbers support them. I personally know many people with a Wii, Wii Sports, and a mound of dust. They are the "casual gamers" that Nintendo spoke of. The new Mario and Zelda games don't interest them. They aren't the same as a typical 360 or PS3 gamer. A large percentage of Wii console sales are from these so called "casual gamers", hence the reason it should not be compared to consoles that are specifically geared to gamers.

It also has that illogical GOTTA HAVE IT image. Everyone wants it, needs it. Like the Apple computer. And those expensive jeans.

I hope the PS3 is able to sell better and to continue selling better at the new lower price.

I really never cared about the IPHONE/IPOD or other Apple products, but I've enjoyed Nintendo games from the Super Nintendo on...

PS3 @ 300 dollars is still 300 euro's here, which is $437.76.

I can only say that these companies are lame, regardless of how good their products are. If they cant even be bothered with honest pricing, then they dont deserve to be able to sell their product.

A point often forgotten by people whining about PS3 price...

PS3(slim):Video Video resolution: 1080p/24p, DVD upscaling: 1080p, Sound HDMI output: 7.1, Analog output: 2.0: $ 299

A normal Blue-Ray player with about the same specs as the PS3: $ 350-500

Even if you buy it just for the blue-ray player, its still cheap. Seriously, stop comparing it to the failbox or wii-wii, its not even in the same league...

In some places only gamer enthusiasts don't pirate. And there aren't many of them either.

Welcome to the rest of the world, folks. China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia,... you name it. Piracy is actually "built-in" in those places. Enthusiasts make a living by modifying and pirating games. The casual gamers buy them in large quantities (since they are dirt cheap) and support the enthusiasts.

It's simply... geography.

Believe it or not, the piracy statistics in those countries can go up to the millions range. When you say that not everyone download games, it's true. Just one person has to download one game then redistribute it on DVD or something. And guess what? Pirated games are downloaded in the thousands range. Imagine that every downloaded copy is then distributed out to about 50 to 100 discs and then spread equally among... countries, and you'll start seeing the large picture.

PS2 sold well because it was easy to pirate. GameCube not so much because it was using a different media, and XBox wasn't that easy to modify or pirate. That was the truth of the last generation. In this generation, look what happened to the console that is the easiest to pirate (Wii) and I'll end it at just that.

Just like the thing with Sony reporting their losses, people would like to believe they are buying PS3 units for cheap rather than believing that it's just because of R&D... It's the same thing here. People don't want to believe in piracy.

I can't justify spending large amounts of money for the sake of playing games... At least not in one shot. Besides, I have PC (and PS2 for a little while longer) before I run out of things to play.

All countries that account for a small fraction of worldwide current-gen console sales.

No, I got that. I'm saying the consoles themselves aren't big sellers in those countries.

Because they import those consoles from either U.S. or Japan if they want to pirate them. Those places are not "primary" markets of any of the big next-gen manufacturers so they never get those consoles in the first place. So either way, they have to import.

Think of it this way... US population is approx. 30 mils. 20 mils Wii have been sold in the US.

Do the math. 1 Wii for every 15 Americans? Come on...
