...the "stick" on the 360 controller is too small compared to the "stick" on the PS3 controller and that's one of my main dislikes.

I think the PS3's "stick" feels like a rough mushroom whilst the 360's is a smoother inverted one.

I believe so.

Xbox 360 controllers are about the best you can get for FPS, next to keyboard and mouse anyway.

Seriously though, at least for shooting games, nothing can rival a gaming mouse with extra buttons....even a regular 3-button mouse trumps any controller.
Captain obvious strikes again!

But kb+mouse only work well only on some games, try playing high speed fighting game with those and you'll start crying... Then there's joystick which just beats every other controller for flying games, and wheel and pedals beat everything for driving games, it all depends on the game.

Ding ding ding! We have a winning answer!

Remember Sony creating the first analog controller? The sticks were put in a secondary position because it was a new feature hardly supported by games, it was tacked on and having a dpad there wouldn't make sense as it's uncomfortable. Now with the analog stick being the primary resting place for your thumb, it makes sense putting it where your thumb would rest if it were put in the least straining position. It's just one of the little innovations that MS picked up from Dreamcast and implemented. Sony decided to stick with legacy. Marketingwise perhaps not a bad decision, as they have a huge flock of blind followers who'd burn the competition's products before having even tried them. But those who aren't brand loyal and simply want the best for themselves it sucks, because they get inferior hardware. Just like how the PS3's analog triggers are bent in the wrong way, making your finger slip off.

And I definitely agree that the inverted top of the thumbstick is a nifty little innovation as well Bob. Dual Shock just isn't precise to me as my fingers always slip off.

Well this probably a matter of tastes even though the dreamcast controller is my favorite of them all the gamepad i feel most comfortable in any game with or without using the analog is still the PS One/PS2/PS3 style gamepad (and my thrustmaster :P ).

A gamepad is best overall I admit, but as many of you must know, I'm on FPS fodder 70% of the time (with GTA occupying 20% of the rest ), so the only controller I'm willing to dish out money for atm is 4000DPI laser mouse with 5 extra buttons for easier gameplay.

I play racing games too, but I'm so used to the keyboard for those (since I rarely played racing games on my PSX) that I find it optimal.

P.S. As neat as it looks, gaming experience with a steering wheel, at least on the PS2 as GOT to be the worst. I tried NFS MW, Hot Wheels 4 and Midnight Club 3 on it, the handling was crap! Either too much over-steer or under-steer! Maybe that's the way its meant to be i.e. more realistic and tougher but i sure didn't like it.

Now that everyone has started talking about what's the best type of control thingamajig, it got me wondering how would one play FPS or racing games with a Guitar Hero controller

Again, PS3 has a mouse controller. The precision is pretty insane, too... making it possible to do a whole **** load of headshots in PS3 fps... only if there were more of them.

Nah... that's just the game engine. You gotta calibrate the wheel, too... which is quite annoying. But if you're driving very fast, then it's oversteer for small turns, but your car will not turn immediately and will skid right out due to momentum. If you're driving slow then it's understeer but easier turns because your momentum is not too large. That's reality.

Actually many many games (expecially arcade racers) just handle a wheel very badly...it's not the wheel's fault it's the way the wheel is badly implemented into the game.

PS3 has outsold the Wii in Japan? - PlayStation 3 News - QJ.NET

Quote:
Japan hardware sales from January 4th to Oct 24th, 2009:

* Wii: 1,012,924
* PS3: 1,006,810
* Xbox 360: 284,943

Estimates for next week's sales charts, January 4th to Nov 1st, 2009:

* PS3: 1,044,310
* Wii: 1,038,924
* Xbox 360: 294,943

If these estimates are correct, then the PS3 may have really gotten ahead of the Wii in Japan for the year. This would be another bad first for the Wii - the first time it would not come out on top on yearly sales.

Nice to see xbox having nice sales figures in japan. Probably thanks in part to rrod no longer being an issue and a larger game selection than before which cater to japanese tastes. A few years ago they were calling ms hardware 'crap', and perhaps somewhat fairly so.

I often hear on this and other forums (NOT u silenus ) that just because Japanese videogame manufacturers greatly outsell foreign consoles in japan it somehow amounts to prejudice. I wouldn't say so. Is Hungary prejudice because Crysis outsold all other higher rated foreign games there?

Also
- Japanese consumers have a limited budget, often it wasn't even enough for the ps3 which is why ps3 sales were low for quite some time
- Japan is going through an economic crysis, consumers in general aren't buying
- There is a long standing familiarity & comfort with japanese brands
- Desire to support home grown businesses (is Hungary's consumers desire to support their videogame companies (eg Crytek) a sign of prejudice?)
- First generation of xbox had almost nothing catering to japanese audience.
- Its successor xbox 360 initially had only a limited selection catering to japanese audience, and its still not that phenominal
- ms having the monumental RROD issue flew in the face of typically high quality Japanese products further smearing their image as "THE" console to buy.

Now that united states has that "buy american" stimulus policy, are they prejudice?
Its been common practice for the last 70 years for many americans to buy Ford, Chrysler, GM. Where is the anger?
Look around the world and you usually see a desire to buy from ones own people. Japan aint bad.

Okay rant over...
