Sony to reintroduce PS2 BC on the PS3?
bit-tech.net | Sony to reintroduce PS2 emulation on PS3? Interesting. If it can be done with a simple firmware update, hallelujah. If not...eh, PCSX2 is still going strong and my new slim PS2 should run for at least a few years

Yes, it seems Sony is gearing up to rerelease PS2 BC after they resolve some speed and compatibility issues. Maybe they should get in contact with the PCSX2 team. :/ Anyway, 60GB NTSC PS3 FTW!

Somehow I can't envision Sony being friendly with emulation authors if you consider what they did to Bleem! and the PSX emulator they bought out to prevent it from selling. I wonder if they are desperate to get PS3 sales and see backwards compatibility to help sell PS3s? BTW this snippet doesn't sound good? "It may instead indicate that Sony is going to start selling PlayStation 2 games on PSN, rather than letting gamers play the games they already have."

Yes. I've tried out all of my old PS2 games and they all run flawlessly. I've tried out a few of these same games on the 80GB software BC PS3 and ran into numerous problems with some of the games, hence my *and do it properly* remark.

There was a nice little pie graph floating around that detailed about 60% of games ran fine while the other 40% had problems ranging from messed up graphics/sound to not even booting on the software BC units. I'd say PCSX2 is catching up quite nicely.

I'll believe it when I see it. They dropped it a long time ago, and knowing Sony they'd be beating their chest by now saying that they did what Microsoft wasn't able to pull off. Also, I'd rather see them create a PSP emulator for it, that would allow PSP games to be downloaded and played in higher resolution, adding online play. I'd get a PS3 only for Monster Hunter already.

just found this ign article on ps3 upscaling. http://media.ps3.ign.com/articles/79...75/imgs_1.html It seems to really help with reducing the aliasing. I could see the big benefit with it on large hdtvs To me the the comparison between ps3 upscaling and pcsx2 is pretty close to the comparison between bluray and 1080p upscaling of DVDs. So PCSX2 is much better looking. ![]()

PS3s compatability list is really lame. It's like they test a game for only a couple hours before branding it Playable on the PS3. Which isn't the case. I started a Tales game on the PS3, cause the site said it played fine on my 80GB model. The game hanged at the same point a few hours into the game. I would've been seriously pissed if it wasn't for the fact I could just transfer the save to my PS2 mem card and play past that point on the PS2. Oh and Paratech, there's a big difference between the Bleem authors and the PCSX2 team. They don't blatantly rip off of Sony's coding, rebrand it and sell it for profit. |

Ok, my use of blatantly was a bit misused there...should've said apparent rip off. I just vaguely remember reading an article in some no name PC magazine years ago about how a person claimed that the reason why bleem ran was because they took Sonys PS1 BIOS and used it as their own to run the emulator. But meh, bleem would've died a couple years later anyways. Other great PS1 emulators were starting to pop up around that time I believe... |

The Xbox 360's emulation for example, while not having enough supported games, it actually makes the games run in HD, it's not just scaling.

I hate it when sites try and compare 2 pictures to each other by doing a screen cap and then putting the images "side by side". If one side is a screen cap @ 480i and the other is @ 1080p, then one of these pics was resized and doing so will introduce artifacts and bluriness (depending on the resize filter used). Who's to say that they only took a screen cap from the games as run on the PS2 and put a PhotoShop layer of half of the pic, adjusted the color a bit, and added some mild gaussian blurring? If they wanted an authentic comparison, both pics would have to be shown at 1:1. Grrr... Anyway, from what I can see on my own system is that games have fewer "jaggies" but it doesn't become blurry at all. The game is just as "sharp" as when I run it with upscaling turned off. It's akin to running a game in PCSX2 in native and then cranking up the internal resolution. Again, this is my experience with my hardware BC PS3.
