resident evil for PC

i just downloaded Resident Evil 1 for PC.. i know how u mount the virtual drives and shyt.. and the installation was all in french so that was alittle hard to follow, but when the game menu comes up, i click on the icon to play the damn game, and windows (vista) tells me the program stopped working. Can anyone help me with this, or do I just need to download a different version of the game??

It could also easily be a problem related to the nature of the files downloaded (such as bundled with malware), which would make fixes even more difficult to suggest.
