Dunno. It fixes that issue related to the digital signature that was preventing people from playing it. Here's more details:

January 31, 2009 - Recently players of Gears of War on PC found the title was no longer able to launch. Epic Games responded to our inquiry regarding what the problem was and what's being done to fix it. The following is from studio vice president Mark Rein.

"The online cheat detection features in Gears of War for Windows are based on digital signatures. Well, we made an embarrassing mistake: we signed the executable with a certificate that expired in a way that broke the game.

We're working with Microsoft to re-sign the binaries properly, and hope to have this fixed very soon. We know how much this situation sucks, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

In the mean time a work-around for this is to set your computer's date back to a date before today."

It boggles me how quickly Epic games went from epic win to epic failure. They used to have next to no drm on their games. UT2004 would play without the disc. UT2003 and 2004 ran natively in linux with no trouble at all.

Now they barely support the PC market and their drm is horrible. I stopped supporting them.

This kind of retarded policy is spreading like a virus... EA, Rockstar, Epic... I won't be supporting any of those companies from now on. I'll boycott any company that uses Securom or any other kind of restriction in their games.

It is indeed retarded that you need to resort visiting sites associated with warez in order to get your legit copy to work. I had the same experience with Test Drive Unlimited, and I'll be damned to run any Securom executable here before having it replaced. I wonder how much of that rootkit I get installed upon the game's installation anyway.

The most retarded part is that this kind of policy simply doesn't raise their income man. They are just losing cash with this.
