Tom Clancy's HAWX

This is probably the last game I was looking forward to for a while. I heard about it last November and I couldn't wait. I mean, honestly; we as PC gamers are getting a good dogfighting game with kickass graphics.

ZOMG!

Who else is pumped? I want to go full-throttle into the wild blue letting off rockets at high velocity! I know you do!

Must buy for me, being a fan of the Ace Combat series. I'm really looking forward to this game now that you mention it, since Ace Combat 6 is out of reach, and PS2 emulation isn't my thing either.

This is NOT a simulator. This is a plain arcade, like Ace Combat. Even more arcade then AC.

It looks like as much as a sim as Ace Combat though, yet highly polished, so it should be proper arcade fun. I actually hope it's an Ace Combat clone with a western story

If you need a simulator (and a good one) try "Lock On". But it is rather hard and... and NOT very user-friendly.

Demo was already out on PSN. 360 is being grounded because my brother got some F's on his report card so I can't check XBL.

Here's a first impression:
- decent graphics
- decent audio
- ridiculous gameplay (the hell...? An airplane game where you drive the airplane like you're inside her, but the view is outside? More on this...)
- story: none. It's a demo

So... first, gotta clarify that after seeing and hearing Killzone 2 on a Sony Bravia, everything looks and hears like **** to me now. Yes, Crysis included. So decent graphics and decent audio means the game might look good enough. The game's environment is quite well-built.

Second... you CAN go into first person view and control your aircraft easier... but for some reason, the missions I had to do in the demo required me to use "Assistance Mode" throughout the entire demo, and pray god... that was the worst idea ever. They could have adjusted the camera to be behind your jet in this mode... but noooo... they just had to make it sideways. Heck... if that was so, at least modify the controls so it felt more like a side-scrolling airplane game. But no... they left the first-person controls intact. Needless to say... that was hell. I didn't know which direction I was going.

And then there's "Air Drift", which means you decelerate your jet and do a quick flip to turn her all the way around. Not a bad idea... but it makes the whole point of "mastering" the sky feel so ridiculous because now... you can pretty much spin around 360 degrees and destroy anything in your path. If that's not cheating enough, you have heat-seeking missiles that hit regardless... so the missions ended in just a matter of seconds with a few drifts and missile launches. I guess in the final game, you won't have that aircraft to boot... but then again...

Overall, I think they're trying very hard to merge an arcade side-scrolling airplane game with a simulation type game. Whether it succeeds or not... well, I can't tell from a demo. But I can say that the "Assistance Mode" is not of any assistance at all, and it's more annoying than it's worth. Heck... I think it's just a different view of the jet. The controls and everything else were exactly identical to when you sit in the ****pit.

Why couldn't they just give us an Ace Combat for PC?

So it's even more arcade than Ace Combat, to the point of being rediculous? Shame, I was looking for a PC counterpart that gives the same kick as Ace Combat...

Just finished the demo, and I agree with you RAP, the sideview is an utter failure. When I fly a plane I'll watch myself in the replay, not during playing. Thankfully I was able to do the Rio mission with a more normal cam, and it got close to the Ace Combat feeling that way. The thing that's lacking is the feeling of feedback, the flying feels too smooth I think, as if the entire physics are left out. I was hoping for a bit more rugged feeling, with the air giving somewhat more resistance.

The graphics are nice and smooth though, and audio is good. No complaints there. Budget bin game for me, just like almost everything

WOOT finally someone I can trust telling me what the game is like XD

I was actually considering preordering....

Have you ever played Jane's USAF Cid?
Would you say HawX is like playing USAF with all cheats and easy options on (and in 3rd person view)?
Would you say it's like playing a combat flight sim with cheats/trainers (so no dead engines, inf fuel, inf ammo, inf chaff/flares etc) or is it even more arcadey than that?

Yep... that was the impression I got. First I saw it, I was like... YAY! ACE COMBAT FOR PEH CEH!

But meh... They just had to go and make it another budget bin game. I don't know what Ubisoft has been thinking lately.

And Schumi, I think it's even more arcadey than that. There doesn't seem to be an indication of fuel or anything else. You just pretty much have a small little icon on the corner to tell you how much ammo you got left.

And like I said... air drifts... and air drops and everything else... hell... I dodged missiles by dropping the jet all the way from top height.

Okay, found a Youtube video with that side view so anyone wondering about it can get a better "look"

There might also be a third-person view behind the plane, but I only know about the existence of the side view and the ****pit view as the mission I played forced me into the side view (dreading it...).

Schumi, I've never played any of such games. The only flight games I've played are Flight of the Intruder, Top Gun 2 (both NES), and some Ace Combat games. As for the demo, I got over a 100 missiles for that level. It's purely focused on the action, it's what Burnout is for the racing genre.

Very off-topic: Yay, Top Gun 2! I remember the good times. I used to play that game a lot when I was still in elementary school.

well after watching a couple of vids on youtube I must say I both like and hate the gameplay...I mean 3rd person view has potential and reminds me of USAF (less some more technical things like a hud constantly applied to your screen...but that far away remote controlled view is awfull...USAF had it as well but it was just so you could check what's around you quick and then resume flying normally....

On the other hand however if it's only missions then it sucks...it needs a freekill mode or something...in USAF you could basically quick-launch certain battles and play then non-stop for as long as you liked...if however I am always going to be confined to mission objectives and once those are done I am done flying then this game is going to suck...

There seems to be very little distinquishing the rockets from each other...in USAF you had Sidewinder's and heatseakers, but you you still had to do a bit of ligning up to get the missile to hit it's target.

Through the use of the hud you could also see things, like which direction you were heading in, how close they were to you, how optimal your current position was to getting a kill on the plane and some other minor details...

This game has potential...but at the same time just does not feel right. I only say that based on Videos though.

Anyways, say thanks to EA that we don't have this in "next-gen" graphics.
