Starcraft II becomes a trilogy

BlizzCon 2008: Starcraft II becomes a trilogy
By Tom Magrino, GameSpotPosted Oct 10, 2008 4:12 pm PT

Blizzard's Rob Pardo reveals sci-fi RTS will now be three separate products; Terran campaign Wings of Liberty will arrive first.

ANAHEIM, California--For many, this morning's keynote address from Blizzard president Mike Morhaime was a bit anticlimactic. After revealing Starcraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and Diablo III at three consecutive events, Blizzard had nothing new to report on a new game from the company. That changed during the Starcraft II panel, as Blizzard's Rob Pardo revealed that rather than a single real-time strategy game, Starcraft II will now be released as a trilogy.

One game for the price of three!

After bemoaning the fact that Starcraft II was shaping up to be an undertaking far larger than the previous game, Pardo said the first game in the series--subtitled Wings of Liberty--will focus on the Terrans. Specifically, it will seek to resolve the conflict between Jim Raynor and Kerrigan, which was the crux of the original Starcraft. The second game, Heart of the Swarm, will focus on the Zerg, while the final game, Legacy of the Void, will be devoted to the Protoss.

Pardo noted that each release will be a fully fledged campaign, featuring 26 to 30 missions apiece. The celebrity World of Warcraft designer also noted that while the ending of each game will be set, the middle of the game will play heavily to player choice, allowing for branching storylines. Pardo also said that the second two releases could be considered expansion packs, but that "we really want them to feel like stand-alone products."

Unfortunately, Pardo did not reveal when the first game in the trilogy will arrive. For more on Starcraft II--now the Starcraft Trilogy--check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

And they'd be smart to release a 90 mission game? No, this is just a fancy way of saying they're going to make at least two expansions.

Also, I bet the majority of players are getting it for the online play - they don't even care about stories.

I disagree. SC1 had a fantastic story and there are many people who DO care about stories.

Sure. And they'll still get their story. Also, don't forget that internet gaming wasn't all that hot when SC came out.

True. Soul Reaver was a great game thanks to its story. But this is not a reason to make three games. 1 game 2 extensions yes. But three games???
I hope Exodus is right about it.

mgs tried to break the mold. As did the alien movies. Quadrilogy.

They did the stand alone thing or tried it at least with Heroes of Might and Magic. Not sure it worked too well.

I can't say I'd be willing to spend $50 once, and then again and again just to get more storyline & single player missions, a few new units per race and some new terrain textures. Particularily if I was a teenager without a job.

.hack series has 4~5 games doesn't it?

i f**king hate that game, just a fancy way to say "hey you're going to pay 4x $50, for one game!"

i baught the first game, and it felt like 1/4 of an RPG.
so i'd have to spend $200 to get the full game?

thats ridiculous.

1) It doesn't seem like they're gonna tell you LESS of a story, just because they plan to make 2 other games doesn't mean they're only giving you 1/3 of a game. You gotta see the final product before getting too hasty and going "WTF I'M GONNA PAY YOU THE SAME PRICE FOR LESS!?".

If they take the time that they would have took to tell the 3 campaigns, and focus it all on making one huge campaign (terran), you get the same amount of game.
That's what they seem to be saying that they will do, now it's just a matter of "are they really doing it or not?". And you can't judge that based on... Well... Nothing right now.

2) They seem to be experiencing on making branching storylines (based on what they're saying) which is pretty nice, and also make the story more interesting (even if the end result is the same).

3) It's vague if the 2 other games will be simple expansions with the price of expansions, or standalone game with the price of a expansion (something that sometime developers do) or standalone with the price that comes with it, but right now they seem to be aiming for simple expansions.

That would only arrives to one more expansion than the original SC had. ZOMFGNOWAITHATISSOBAD.

So, really, if they give you the same amount of game that you usually would, but simply focus on giving a more fleshed out story... What is SO ALARMING that you can't just wait for the game and see if they f***ed it up, or actually gave you your money worth?

("I for one welcome our new (spawn more) overlords")

I'm gonna wait and see for myself before I take out the pitchforks. And if they really did screw us up, I'll just pass up on the two additional "games" (expansions) and simply keep playing SC2 online, which, even if it's 1/10 the fun of the original SC, will still give me MUCH MORE than what I paid for.
(It's easy, if they screw us up on the single-player, just send the message "No frikin way that I'm paying for that, go to hell Activision Blizzard Incorporated, I'll just stick to the multi".)

(I'm sure we'll see a lot of custom maps about how Blizz "RUINED EVERRRYYYYTTTHHIIIINNNNNNNGGG" . Maybe put the player in control of a character named "Acti-Blizz" and our mission would be to kill units named Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo)

Interesting move on Blizzards part. It probably means more money for them, but more pissed off fans. But they probably won't care. They already know most of their fans are WoW addicts anyways.

If they do do a stand alone package we can expect those stand alones to probably cost as much as the originals.

What do we get new in the standalone, well for $40-50 we get a very good single player storyline as well as new terrain types and probably a few new units.

But the bulk of what starcraft offers is in the multiplayer and all the fantastic user mods and maps that will spring forth. The single player is in many ways a trainer for preperation and building your skills so your half decent at playing the game. Every level they introduce a new creature in the tech tree.

They said they will have each of the trilogy center on a single race. Does that mean we will mostly be playing 1 particular race. That won't do as you need several missions for each race in single player to get used to each race before being thown into the jungle that is battle.net. I don't see how we can be avoiding fully fleshed out story arcs of any race if it takes 7 or 8 missions per race to get used to each race. How would they have a story focus on 1 particular race when 1/3 of the missions would be dedicated to a particular race.

...I read it as same story..3 different viewpoints...It actually sounds interesting. Aside from being limited in the multi to only the race of the game you bought possibly it does not sound like such a bad thing.

This is an interesting move from Blizzard. Here's hoping that each 'expansion' is delivered with quality in mind and not rushed drastically just to see it out the door. The last real time strategy game that I played was Total Annihilation and the expansion packs although fun didn't have the impact of the original game. Pricing aside, the thought of focusing each races story into one game sounds pretty neat.

I don't see that happening, otherwise (and unless they release all 3 at once) everybody would be the same race at the beginning.

Also, we don't even know the price they're going to charge. The article stated that the second parts could be considered expansions, and expansions usually have expansion prices.
