Wii Music

It's due to be out very soon. I saw several videos, read a few articles and forum threads here and there. For those who don't know, Wii Music is another Nintendo's idea to approach so called casual gamers. We all know what Guitar Hero or Rock Band are all about, right? Now, Wii Music is basically the same thing only there's no instrument-shaped controller. Instead you play with Wiimote. Waving it, pressing buttons and such. Now while the idea itself isn't bad, I myself love both GH and RB, but this thing is somewhat retarded. I mean, when you play on a plastic guitar on hit plastic drums, you at least have a feeling of playing it, while here you're being attracted with 'air violin' and similar instruments. What's that supposed to be? I can play 'air whatever' right now anyways, don't need Wii Music for that. I'm sorry, it may sound biased, however this Nintendo's idea is retarded, honestly. I liked Wii Sport, even Wii Fit but Big N could do much, much better with a console which is so full of potential. It appears that creators themselves have no idea how to use it, they come out with something like this. What will be next? Uncloaking toilet simulator?

Personally, I don't see how this is any different than Rock Band or Guitar Hero on the largest sort of scale. Sure, you're using standard controllers and going about the motions rather than using controllers that resemble the instruments in question, and from that perspective I can sort of see where you're coming from.

However, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are both video games. They aren't meant to emulate playing a real instrument (though, for the record, RB/GH4's drums end up doing that very effectively anyway). Given that, this game isn't much different.

Besides, it allows for greater flexibility. Now you can mimic a wide variety of instruments without putting loads of resources into making a violin controller or something.

Regardless, one thing has me a bit puzzled. How exactly does this game work? Okay, you "saw" your Wii remote back and forth to mimic a violin, but how do you input different pitches? The Nunchuck control stick? Okay, that's fair I guess. What about drumming? Are the components able to measure changes in position to provide different drum sounds? If so, how accurate is this ability?

I remain skeptical about this particular game.

It's the controllers that make GH and RB fun to play, try to play GH with a gamepad and you'll see what I mean. And while countless people enjoy both GH and RB somehow I don't see big Wii Music communities coming up. It does allow great flexibility, true but feels kinda awkward playing something that's made of... air. It doesn't appeal to me at all.

And for the record, RB and GH's drums are nowhere near playing real drums, ask anybody who plays them. Altho it gives a good taste for things to come if you want to try it in the future.

Yeah, that's a good point. But "pantomiming" Wii controllers is still significantly different than tapping buttons on a D-pad in this regard.

Oh I agree, nothing can really emulate a real instrument. I meant the drums are closer to the real thing than the guitar controllers. It's probably a good thing to practice on too, as real drumkits are very expensive.

My father used to be a very adept drummer. He learned the basics by tapping on pieces of rubber tubing draped over the tops of buckets.

Yeh, same goes with guitar too, it's amazing how some people are naive and believe they could learn playing an instrument by playing a game. It takes years to get a hang on an instrument and switch from making noises to actually playing music. Especially with such hard instrument as drums where the bass pedal scares off many eager adepts.

frankly:

there is absolutely NO excuse for using cheap ass synthy samples for a piece of software like this. Sorry, but it sounds so cheap and bad its a joke.
And since thats not some minor sideissue, but the whole point of the product i can only say its a really shamefull result for nintendo.

Quite right camorfin, but Nintendo don't seem to care, they use midi samples for most of their games anyway. Apart from this game I was hugely disappointed when they used midi music in Zelda:TP. This particular title deserves really more than that, even PS1 sounded better.

Well, if you guys don't like it, blame Miyamoto. He's the main guy behind it.
