I wonder if the devs having to fit it onto a DVD will hamper the game in the long run...I don't really care, don't really like FF games It's quite funny over at the Playstation forums, loads of people are talking about how this is going to kill the PS3, lol, it's not as though the PS3 has lost all of it's exclusives.

Square Enix Answers Questions About Xbox 360 Version Of ‘Final Fantasy XIII’
32 Comments | Posted by Tracey John on 7/14/08 at 6:15 pm.
The Microsoft media briefing ended with a bang this morning by showing a new trailer from “Final Fantasy XIII.”
Immediately following the briefing, Square Enix held a press conference about the game, where “FFXIII” producer Yoshinori Kitase and Square Enix exec Shinji Hashimoto answered all the questions they could in 45 minutes.
Here’s a round-up of the facts so far from the brief Q&A session:

Square Enix exec Shinji Hashimoto and “FFXIII” producer Yoshinori Kitase
* Why the move to Xbox 360 in addition to the PS3? Hashimoto explained via a translator: “We considered the hardware, and because of the situation and the spread of the hardware, we decided that way.”
* Will there be any content differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360? Kitase: “The game will be the same, but we have to consider Blu-ray and the other format, so it might be different [in that regard].” Hashimoto later added: “For content and gameplay, we don’t have the intention to make so much difference according to platform.”
* What’s the development update for the game? Kitase: “We are using new tools called Crystal Tools for development and developing the title on PC. From this year on, our pace is going a little bit faster. In the near future, we will probably be able to introduce further footage.”
* What’s the development process for the game? Hashimoto: “As we announced at the Microsoft presentation, as of today we are ready to start developing the title for Xbox 360. First, we will complete the PS3 in Japan. Then after that we will start localization of ‘FFXIII’ for PS3 for US and Europe. Then at the same time, we will start Xbox 360 the version development. That’s our entire process of development.”
How is the gameplay different from “Final Fantasy XII”? Kitase: “The entire atmosphere is different. There is more tempo and speed. On screen, it’s flashier and there’s more excitement in ‘FFXIII.’” … Every time we release a new game we try to make its own game design, so we don’t have any intention to make it closer to the previous and we are trying to make a new and unique game design.”
* What is the timing of the releases? Kitase: “As for the timing between US and Europe, we will try to make it as close as possible. Also, localization for US and Europe we will try to expedite as much as possible than the previous case.”
* The briefing implied that there was no Xbox 360 release for “FFXIII” in Japan. Is that true? Hashimoto: “Considering the market situation in US and Europe, the spread of 360, really our main reason for the change, and as for Japanese market and business direction, we have not changed anything.”
* At the Microsoft conference, it was announced that “”Last Remnant” would be released on Games for Windows. Any plans for “FFXIII”? After a long sigh, Kitase said: “For now, it’s to be decided.”
* How many discs will the game ship on? Kitase: “It is still to be decided.”
* Any plans for the Xbox 360 version to take advantage of Xbox Live? Kitase: “It’s to be decided.”

Lulz, @ that other format.

just use bluray on the 360 and screw the majority of early adopters, you know what want to.

My internal sources indicate that a future console will have an integrated blu-ray drive. its gunna be called the Xbox360 Elite Pro(ok the name is probably wrong, but my internal sources do indicate a blu-ray model in the works)

i see this move very possitive... no matter what people think about it. the reason for that is because FF series were shipped with 4 discs in the pasts and everyone love the game... now about blu-ray... it´s shipped in one disc and that´s fine but the big question is.... it´s better?????? the answer NO! why??? very simple i´ve tested several games in both platforms and i see no advantages of the blu-ray.

blu-ray probably offer more disc-space but developers are forced to add installations that at the end is slower than swap discs(MGS4) so i do preffer to have FFXIII in 3 dual-layer DVD´s than one single blu-ray disc and 7 installations LOL!

i´ll compare Devil May Cry 4 as i have both versions here... the PS3 and the 360 version(PC version aswell btw ).. in this case the game fits perfectly in a dual-layer but let´s say we have two discs for the 360 ok??

Code:
                        blu-ray(PS3) 360

loading time: +5 secs(not always) very fast
installation time: about 22 minutes 0
swap time: 0 1 minute LOL
if you don´t see the difference and admit it you´re blind...

You fail to note that the resulting installed game runs faster then it would from disc.

edit, no you didn't.

regardless, theres no reason bluray games must be installed to HDD, infact Blu-ray technology at release is faster then then 22x DVD's

Why PS3 games install

Posted by Talk Playstation
on Jul.10, 2008 at 2:52 pm

The Official Playstation Magazine (August issue) has the reasoning as to why a certain amount of Playstation 3 games require an install. Its because its quicker to read the game data from the hard drive rather than the Blu-Ray disc. This also means shorter loading times during gameplay.
Chief software architect at Eutechnyx, Dr Andrew Perella says:
“The biggest benefit of loading data from hard drive as opposed to Blue-ray is that the seek times are lower. Games that make use of lot of user customisations are hit hard by this as the developer cannot know ahead of time what will need to be loaded”
I bet your now thinking ‘does that mean every game will be installed to the hard drive’, the answer is no. Look at Call of Duty 4 and Uncharted Drake’s Fortune, they didn’t require an install and ran fantastically well.
Game developers are working around this by taking a more pro-active approach to Blu-Ray’s data transfer technology. Some are working with streaming methods that load data while your playing, others are duplicating frequent required data around the disc so it can be located and loaded up faster.
Pete Hines of Bethesda, the vice president of public relations and marketing says:
“we get around it by doing caching to the hard drive behind the scenes. And yes, we do have more than one copy of data on the disc in different locations to make the streaming process faster.”
It is understood that in the future, game installs for the Playstation 3 will be a thing of the past.

"boom headshot"

you're right squall, do people really think this will be on 360 without needing to install on a hd?

SE will tell microsoft to screw their policy of avoiding using the hd for games installs

This was my favourite part
