Report: 'Team Ninja' Follows Leader Out of Tecmo | Game | Life from Wired.com

Looks like the departure of Ninja Gaiden II director Tomonobu Itagaki from Tecmo is going to be more like a mass exodus.

1up.com, whose Team Ninja confidant James Mielke broke the story about Itagaki's departure last week, reported Sunday that three dozen other members of the Team Ninja development group are getting ready to turn in their badges. Interestingly enough, it also seems as if all three dozen will follow their leader's footsteps and file suit against Tecmo for unpaid bonus royalties.

One more interesting note from the 1up story: Tecmo may have violated Japanese law by not immediately reporting Itagaki's lawsuit when he originally filed it on May 14.

Itagaki's last day with Tecmo is July 1.

Quickie question: does Team Ninja deserve bonus royalties?

Tecmo taken to court for alleged labor law offenses

Tecmo - The events that followed Ninja Gaiden 2's launch haven't been too lovely for Tecmo. For one, star developer Tomonobu Itagaki has left the fold and it didn't take long for other key Team Ninja members to follow suit. Today, Japanese website Jiji reports that the long time publishers are in even more hot water.

Disgruntled Tecmo employees have apparently filed an 8.3 million yen (US$77,000) lawsuit against their employer for several violations of Japanese labor laws. The case filed in court represents some 300 Tecmo employees with salary disputes.

According to the lawsuit, Tecmo has been illegally placing employees under "flexible schedules" for four years now. This allegedly allowed the company to get away with not paying hundreds of hours' worth of overtime wages. This forced the hand of the Tecmo Labor Union to take immediate action.

Other allegations against the game company include the falsification of corporate documents and cover-ups of accounting papers. We'll give you more updates as they come.

Tecmo issues gag order on Tomonobu Itagaki

Tecmo moves to shut Tomonobu Itagaki up - In case you blinked and missed it, Tomonobu Itagaki, famed for his work on the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden franchises, had announced that he will leave Team Ninja come July.

He also made the sentiments of his departure clear when he slapped Tecmo with a lawsuit when he made the announcement.

The statement he released announcing his departure revealed that Tecmo failed to deliver on a completion bonus for Dead or Alive 4. Tecmo responded to this, explaining that the promised bonus was made by the company's previous management.

Things started to spin out of control after that. As many as three dozen Team Ninja members allegedly announced their departure from the company due to their own gripes with the management, saying that for years, they've been shorthanded the pay they were due. They also punctuated their departure with a lawsuit, following Itagaki's example.

In an effort to minimize further damage Itagaki may cause, Tecmo has issued a gagging order on him. Basically, they just told him to shut up in legalese. Famitsu reports the contents of the gagging order:

* He is not allowed to take confidential information outside of the company.
* He is not allowed to talk about the business of the company or criticize the business of the company.
* He is not allowed to make inflammatory remarks which may hurt the company’s business.
* He is not allowed to talk to the media regarding the company’s business.

Thieving scums... Next, Tecmo will cry us bloody tears that the devs were underpaid because of piracy...
They better at least give golden parachutes to these people (as in, the due $$$ plus extra $$$ for their silence)

Good for them. Tecmo's managment is cheap enough not to pay 77.000 $ to their overtime working employee's the moment they are making millions by their work. Probably their management can do it better on their own i presume .

Well, looks like their management royally screwed up. Not paying is bad enough, but taking away their bonus just went too far! They make millions but can't cough up $77,000 for 300 or so people? I wouldn't be surprised if the DoA series just bombs now...
