Need For Speed: UnderCover

Riccitiello: We were torturing Vancouver studio // News // GamesIndustry.biz

Quote:
EA's John Riccitiello says that the company was torturing its Vancouver team with a rigorous 12 month development cycle, but that has now been changed for the better.

At the William Blair & Company's 28th Annual Growth Stock Conference, he indicated that he was pretty disappointed with Need for Speed last year.

"I thought it was an okay game, in terms of gameplay. It's not good. But who wanted Pro Street? It was a sort of made up, put numbers on the side of your car and pretend to drive your Ferrari where? Or your Porsche where?"

This year, the company will be releasing Need For Speed: Undercover - a game with a very strong mission structure that Riccitiello compared to The Transporter.

"For those of you who ever saw movies like The Transporter - it's sort of a cult classic among people with a B-movie mentality, which fits me perfectly.

"I liked it. I apologize. For those of you with no taste, and you liked it too, we can go have a Schlitz after this."

He said that the new title is a much richer proposition with a huge, embedded storyline behind it. Thanks to the strong narrative hook, he feels really good about the title.

Riccitiello noted that the Vancouver Need For Speed team had been working for eight consecutive years on a 12 month development cycle.

"Last summer we added head count and split the team in two, so now there are two teams on a 24 month cycle. And this is sort of their first 16 and-a-half month game...Because we didn't do it far enough ago to give us a full two year dev cycle."

Next year's game will be a full two year development cycle, he said.

"We were torturing a very talented group of people up in Vancouver, which makes it harder to be as innovative every year. So, I think we are going to get better from here.

"I'm confident that Undercover is a much better game than Pro Street, and I expect that from this point forward they will do a lot better."
Carbon and ProStreet was meh, how about this one?

Based on movie? Look good if NFS had a storyline. Hate Prostreet

A racing game with a story line? I doubt it'll be anything special... but then again, I'd love to be wrong.

Actually, I find ProStreet infinitely better then Carbon... And to be completely honest, I think I prefer the actual racing to Most Wanted. It plays more realistically rather then like an arcade racer. The way I see it, it kinda mixes what NFSU and NFSU2 had, and adds a bit of graphics. Its not THAT bad, it just isn't great.

I highly doubt I will like this....then again I highly doubt my PC will be able to play it either way (lack of Pixel Shader 3 support on the graphics card).

NFS is becoming more and more like a GTA like game and less and less of NFS...ProStreet was a return to just plain, no-frills racing which was awesome (woulda been a little nicer with more common single player features outside of Career and if Split Screen coulda been added it would have been amazing).

Mission based racing is most certainly not the way to go.

EA have ruined a once excellent franchise, unless they go "ok we will make Most Wanted 2" i see any "cool hip new idea" doomed to failure.

Seconding what refraction said. Honestly... I find that anything is better than ProStreet, and ProStreet is indefinitely better than Carbon. Need For Speed just isn't the same anymore. Even the customizations feel very forced and useless now. It used to be fun customizing your cars bodies and stuffs, but ultimately, it's still very limited. When I first heard of Carbon, I thought it would let us customize a lot more, but in the end, it was a big disappointment. ProStreet was an even more severe let-down in that department.

They really need to go back and just give us 40 or so exotics on beautifull tracks in the alps and other wonderfully picturesque locations. No, body mods (they have killed the novelty of it), no night racing, no ricing, nothing other than beautifull cars on beatifull tracks. No dritfting, no drags, no clever racetypes, no story, just pure no frills exotic racing.
Then from there they can try again to change it and improve it and hopefully get it right this time.

Very good news, but it has to be better than ProStreet because ProStreet is not even close in gameplay comparing with other NFS releases.

Just go play any other racing game for that. Specifically Gran Turismo.

I love the drag, drifting and other modes of gameplay. And the tuning and tweaking (both performance and aesthetics) is one of the few features which make me come back time and time again to the NFS series.

What they need is to perfect the whole package, and to go into further detail. Along with expanding the amount of cars and tracks (more exotic locations will be very welcome). Night time racing isn't bad... in moderation. A whole game at night is just irritating though...

You got a point Schumi.
I think they better work on the details, in every action you do has a different outcome with different endings for the game.

Closest new game yes.....but still a far cry from it....the closest is good old moddable NFS4-HS....if World Racing 2 had better handling and more propper exotics instead of crappy unknowns or VWs it would also have come close...but as it is it bombed and is a very dissapointing game (modding does help the car list though....just not the awfull handling).

I thought Need for Speed wasn't coming out for the PC? Is it listed for the PC anywhere?

NFS has ALWAYS been a PC game. it went multi platform after (or around) the third one.

I doubt they will ever stop it being on its original platform.

Need for Speed originated on the 3D0, NOT the PC. It isn't listed on Electronics Boutique's website...
