Do they have Old school rpgs for the computer????

i am getting a new computer and i need some games for it. I really only play rpg, but the ones i see are that gay momrpg. I love old school rpg like crono triger and all the final fantasy series expect 12 that sucked ass. Do they make any games that like. Where you don't just run around and swing your sword. If not then its shooter time

not really,

only "rpgs" that are wrongly titled to the genre,
like Oblivion, which we all know is a fps with rpg elements

you could always play rpgs on emulators like epsxe and pcsx2,
I'm thinking of replaying suikoden v on the pc

+ gothic series
yes, it's a fps

there's no party system or command based fighting
(note - this does not mean turn based)

Neither party system nor command based fighting is necessary in a rpg

So gothic is action/adventure?

but they are the key attraction in gameplay of an rpg,
without these features it isn't really a true rpg (J-RPG like the OP wants)

Imagine a driving game with no track,
instead you just drive around. No opponents and no time

- like gta. Would you call gta a racing game?

for similar reasons I wouldn't call Oblivion an RPG.
Ratchet and Clank would qualify as an rpg if you apply the distinction to be as loose as you do in the case of oblivion

yes, Gothic is action/adventure

Key elements that make up a role playing game are usually an engrossing storyline, the world is more realized, more npc interaction, a monetary(money) system where you can buy from shops, a seemless overworld world from start to finish for the game and not having "levels" where a mission ends and you exit the game and go to some briefing for the next level, and always the character stat developement.

Honestly so many games mix rpg elements in them now days and rpgs are mixing elements from other genres its hard to call any game a pure old school rpg. And its for the best really. It makes games more immersive.

Its better to like what you like and dislike what you dislike.

So an rpg is only an rpg if you're not in a first person perspective?
riiiigggght

Oblivion kinda sucked alot compared to morrowind, but it was still about as RPG as things get.

To OP, looks like you're after jRPGs. Very few exist on PC. If you can punch your way out of that jRPG box, though, there's many PC RPG gems out there. Looks like PCXL covered the big ones.

Soul reaver is action/adventure
Tomb raider is action/adventure
gothic is rpg. Plain and simple

You could say that a track is needed in a racing game (which isn't by the way) but an rpg isn't defined by party system. In a role playing game the character can be alone

He is asking for jrpg so you are right not suggesting oblvion but you cant just say oblivion is fps, this is blasphemy!
EDIT: Did server went off for a while??

Another good game is arx fatalis

well if its FF style stuff you are looking for, this might spark your intrest. and dont be too quick about passing it off since its a fan-game, i was sort of leaning towards ignoring it myself at first but give it an hour or two and you will see that this is well worth your time.

Septerra Core was all right...it had quite a bit of dialog in it though, most of which was quite annoying and made me want to shut it off a lot of times. But it's still worth a play And I remember that game being long...very long...then again, it might've seemed that way because of the dialog .

You could always hunt down the Wizardry, Ultima, Bard's Tale, and D & D Anthologies and run them in DOS BOX.
