I think of the overlap between the fourth and fith generations as the golden era. You had the snes still going strong and the psx and n64 settling in. There were a lot of good pc games out around then as well.

I went for the 16 bit era, at that time you could own a Super Nintendo and a Sega Genesis for ~ $200. I loved both systems

You had great platform games, RPGs, racers, some decent arcade ports, some of the best Nintendo games were started, Mario RPG, Mario Kart, you had the Mario All Stars for free with a Super Nintendo purchase for a while, you had some great Sega games, some of the sports games were primitive but fun, there were some great fighting games, Super Street Fighter, Street Fighter Alpha 2, The best Megaman X games were made.

Squaresoft had it's best RPGs, from Final Fantasy IV and VI, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana, Castlevania IV was great, Super Mario World was fun.

Then there were games like Starfox that had the great graphics at the time.

And the best thing of all, most of the greatest 16 bit games have been digitized and can be played forever! Another 16 bit gamer, play a while, play forever!

Or for as long as microsoft does not screw up backwards compatibility for us retro gamers..which they have already started doing in 64bit OSs...

Linux doesn't have a Genesis emulator?

What about compiling Haze's MAME/Genesis emulator for Linux? I could see that as doable!

I'm sure there'd be emulators to run emulators as well...

Don't lauigh, DOSBOX exists for a reason!

8-bit Nes FTW!

seriously the original nintendo is what started it all IMO.

so much games were made for that system, and alot of those were actually good games.

megaman 1-6, Super Mario Bros 1-3, duck hunt, Zelda 1&2 (well i didn't like Zelda 2....), North and South, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1-3, Battle Toads, Double Dragons... etc.

all those games bring back memories; and all those games you can tell that Gameplay and FUNfactor were the driving motif.
now games are too focused on 3d-realistic graphics.

i think once games started going 3d, it really killed the "love" in games.

Super Mario All Stars was better than Super Mario 1-3, Double Dragon was better on the Genesis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV rocked, so did Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and The first 3 Megaman X games were also great.

My first real console (well, the console that actually PLAYED with, cause I had an Atari 2600 that got broken some days after my mom bought it, second hand) was the N64.

I used to hate Sony and Sega back then. And I always claimed that N64 was more powerful than PS (you know, childish discussions ), but I can't imagine my childhood with a PS. Banjo-Kazooie, Mario and Zelda made my early days and I would not exchange them FOR ANY PS title. =)

I was a Nintendo basher until I purchased a Super Nintendo in March 1994.

Although I was and still am addicted to Vs. Super Mario Bros in the arcade!

My first console was a Sega Genesis, back in September 1992, later I purchased a Super Nintendo.

the super nintendo era was good, but the NES beat it in terms of games.

the SNES barely had any games compared to the NES.

they even were making new NES games, at the same time as they were for SNES.
meaning that the system could hold its own against the snes.

Hard to choose between 3rd and fourth. I voted 3rd tho. Those games like Contra, Mario, Chips and Tales, etc just too great although gameplay were very simple. I think gaming world changed a lot and getting much more popular when better graphics consoles like megadrive and snes came out. Both 3rd and 4th generation also golden era for me. I was still in primary shcool or seconadary school that time, nice memory.
