That particular phrasing indicates that MS may not be counting Wii as part of the current hardware generation.

The news comes less than a day after Sony chimed in with PS3 worldwide sales figures, which completed our glimpse at each console's worldwide sales as of March 31, 2008:

1. Wii - 24.45 million units
2. Xbox 360 - 19 million units
3. PlayStation 3 - 12.85 million units

Update: Microsoft has confirmed to Shacknews that it did not take the Wii into account when it claimed the Xbox 360 as worldwide console leader.

"Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen. high definition gaming console, Wii excluded," the company clarified when asked how Xbox 360 could lead worldwide with 19 million when the Wii has sold 24.45 million.

He explains: Oh, Wii only sold more because it does NOT have mega powerful graphics (!!!).
Where is the logic?
Yeah, this guy is a genius, and he is right. 360 is the world leader if you pretend the Wii doesn't exist! Cool.

Hmm, Code Lyoko, Marble Mania, Mario Kart Wii, Metal Slug Anthology, Metroid Prime 3, Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection, and Zelda: Twilight Princess, no there aren't any fun games for the Wii!

And not counting components who are older but overclocked, since they aren't running at default settings. So different category too!

I'm going to do some math:
XBox360 units sold per year: 7.60 million (released for 2.5 years)
PlayStation 3 units sold per year: 8.57 million (released for 1.5 years)
Wii units sold per year: 16.30 million (released for 1.5 years)

Not too shabby, is it? PS3 is actually beating XBox360 by 1 million units every year, while Wii is beating 360 by up to 10 million units per year. I don't see how this is in MS' favor. I'd think that it's time for them to look at the figures and start taking some action.

Edit: It's amazing how well the PS3 is selling, though... considering its price tag is almost twice that of the Wii. Seems like Sony is making some money after all.

I actually find Sony to be doing the poorest of the three (at the moment, it should obviously change in the future) and MS to be doing good.

If you compare it to :
1) The past generation.
2) The popularity/hype of the consoles.

Then MS is doing much better than in the past (and is doing fine considering the refusal of Japaneses to buy a 360, they're already closing in the number of total Xbox1 sold, who's at around 24M) while Sony is having a trouble properly shifting the PS3 into high-gear and flying toward the skyyyyyy. When you have the huge popularity and name of the Playstation, you expect more than this. Especially with the PS2 who gave a LOT of credibility/starpower to Sony/Playstation.

If it wasn't for the Playstation name, I doubt the PS3 would even manage to sell this way, that's a given. They're still burning on the fumes left from the PS2, and the occasional good game.



But still, MS shouldn't start popping their collar and go "Hey baby, look at mah stuff, it's hot!". Everyone know that the Wii is still going strong, and that the PS3 will finally enter Turbo mode once the good games finally start being released at a steady pace. Once people finally start bashing their heads against the wall trying to make a game and actually finish them, the flow of good games should pick up pretty nicely and give some nice fuel for the PS3 to start being a real contender for the race.
And once that happen, MS won't really have anything to gloat about...
They're just giving us materials to throw in their face in 1 year from now. "You said you were doing well? HA! LOOK AT NOW!".

I am going to kill this June... for MGS4!! Sincerely, my thought right now is it's finally here!!

But that also means MGS fans who haven't yet bought a PS3 might reconsider. I'm sure 10 or 11 reviews of the game are going to force them to shell out that $400 for a brand new Blu-Ray player... that just happens to also be able to play their favorite game.

The PS3 is nice, I won't dispute that, it was never my point in the first place. I just see the nice sales as being not representative of what the console propose YET. But that it WILL propose soon.
I'm not disagreeing that the consoles usually start slow either, that was part of the thing. I was saying the same thing you did. Except that the current good sales are partly because of the starpower of Sony's/Playstation name. Which is obvious, name has a big impact, like the GTA name. It was earned, and people know that it'll get better in the future with more games, but they know that based on the name, even tho most games are going multi-platform they keep trusting based on the name.
It's not a bad thing, it doesn't mean the PS3 isn't worth it. I'm just saying that while the games haven't landed yet, people are mostly buying based on the trust on Sony based on previous experiences (like the PS2).


Nyway, guess it's not worth arguing too much on that, since we're pretty much thinking the same thing anyway (even tho maybe I'm not wording it well enough, 2AM and with english being my second language, sometime I have a hard time showing what I want to say). Would make for a pointless discussion =/. I would rather not start a dispute either, even if I'm probably coming as aggressive too.

well, I didn't like the N64 either, so
Mario Kart, Zelda and Metroid Prime don't interest me, for one. But it's all a matter of preference.... I sold the DS too.... oh, and the PSP as well
The 360 interests me, but I already have a good pc, and that lowers the need to get one a lot. The PS3 has yet to deliver some mind-blowing games before I'd consider it.

I still enjoy the PS2 and Dreamcast, though
