The best Ridge Racer, according to you
Ridge Racer's been a pretty long running series by now, in recent years especially seen launching at the same time as a new console.
I was wondering what people think is the best installment in the series. For me, it's Ridge Racer Type 4. I think at the time the series was at its best, and everything after it has just been emulating previous installments, often omitting some of the elements that R4 had. The PSP games are great, but they're still pretty much a collection of tracks of previous installments, with the exception that they feature nitro's, which seems more like an obligation (because of burnout and nfs underground) than an innovation. While RR was the arcade racer on PS1, I think Burnout, despite not having arcade origins, took over this role on the PS2. No comment on the current-gen consoles since I don't have one. As such, I'm including RR6 and 7 in this poll, but I'll be honest and say that everything I know about them has been solely from trailers. If I've been missing out, fill me in, but AFAIK they're a lot in the same vein as the PSP games, perhaps with a bit more originality. Games that I consider very similar to each other, I've combined in the above poll. Note that Ridge Racer 2 (arcade) is just a revision of Ridge Racer and not the same game as Ridge Racer Revolution. By the way, the N64/DS game wasn't made by Namco, but a Nintendo team. I think they did a pretty good job, since gameplay-wise it fits in with the other games nicely. I hope I didn't forget any games in the poll ![]() ...I even added in R: Racing Revolution, although it's not really a Ridge Racer game, but rather a simulation (of sorts) made by the same team.

I didn't know Ridge Racer V was arcade as well as PS2. I like the Arcade, Playstation, and Nintendo 64 versions. When I get an XBOX 360, I'll get the Ridge Racer games for it!

RRV was released for PS2 first, then they made an arcade edition based on it afterwards. I don't know the exact differences.
Btw, ever since the PS2, with the exception of Ridge Racers 2 on PSP they've been released around console launches. I can't help but think it's because otherwise they wouldn't stand out between the overcrowded racing game market nowadays.... People sure expect more from a racer now than ~10 years ago. Hence the commercial failure of the new Sega Rally, and Ridge Racer is similar in concept.

Ridge Racer Type 4 without a doubt. The music, the feel, the tracks and that opening, I still play it at least once a year. Rage Racer is probably my second fav.

While I agree with you about Ridge Racer Type 4 (although Ridge Racer 64 was pretty suave) the opening FMV to RRT4 always made me think of Mentos. Broadzilla breaks her heels and then hitches a ride in a racing car that just happens to be burning past on her way to work... I swear I was waiting for Reiko to turn to the camera and pull out the old Mentos.

I voted for Ridge Racer Type 4. It was the best looking racing game in PS1. However, the gameplay was bad . No stunt and damage at all. But for race lovers it was really cool. I used to play that 5 hours a day , was able to unlock 70 or something cars ,but not even close to half. Good game after all .

RRT¤ for me. I liked the game in the very beginning, but I couldn't buy it in 1999, because I hadn't PSX or emulator. The most miserable thing about the game is that unlocking all the cars takes forever... for those who can't share their cars with friends.
I have played only RR1, RR64 and RRT4.
