Steam hasn't been that bad for a long time. I actually had no problem using it =/. It's working fine for me, even tho it ****ed horribly before.
(I had to use it for TF2 a lot, and various other small games I bought (like Audiosurf) and I can't say it's working bad)

I only first started using steam after it had been out for a while. except for when the community was beta (which was optional to participate in), I never had problems with Steam.

But hey, I'm using Vista without problems =P

I hated steam dfor a long time,
the idea of discless games and needing to be online to play anything

but recently steam has worked great for me,
I'm loving using it more than I did xbox live

I can't have a dump and play Lumines at the same time when in front of my PC, so I'll stick with the PSP version.

Well, Discless is fun (you can always redownload them anyway if you want, so it's fine) but needing to be online is less fun.
But by now a lot of people are online all the time... So it's becoming less and less of a problem.
(and I mainly like games who have a Online side in Steam, other games are usually purchasable in another way, with a disc and all...)

Still, the system is invasive. Requiring Internet access to play a single player game is fundamentally flawed. >_<

Its either no-CD/DVD's/images/Steam emulators for me or nothing at all.

I personally wouldn't get these games even for free, if they came with Steam, but that's just me...
Too bad, this game was nice.

Well, that's the price for the standalone game. It comes cheaper if you get the orange box completely.

Why the hate? You need a internet connection to play the game anyway, and Steam doesn't do anything special (as far as I can see) that warrant being ignored that bad .

(You can always get the box version tho, I guess. No idea if it forces Steam or not on you. But hating that bad for so small reasons just make you miss on great games for no real reasons.)

I mean, why do you hate Steam THAT bad? =/

One reason I can see: DRM

DRM is nothing but the spawn of Satan. It has been proven that DRM is not a hinderance and games DO sell well without it.

Sure it's bad. But what exactly does Steam do in that regard that warrant that much hate? I'd like to know since I use it, I simply haven't had any problems up to now, but it'd be nice to know.

I don't support DRM, but what do they do concerning DRM that **** this bad? =/
(it would have to be PRETTY bad to pass on Portal or TF2, but if they do something horrible (like Sony would do in the past...) I may pass on games next time)

Actually, if you check here you can see that Valve overpriced the games, so it looks like you are buying them cheaper when you get the whole package.
They list TF2 price as 29.95, and now theyre selling it for 19.95, the REAL price for that game.

Thats why i waited so long to get TF2, i knew the price would adjust a little bit.

And im still @ 58% downloading... hope this doesnt take the whole weekend to finish...

Oh and HL2 for 29.95? i got it for 35 way back in 2004 when it was released, and i also got css for free.

I do not hate steam, but i used to. NOW things work, thats why.

I know that the price is quite big, but 50$ for HL2 (and exp) + Portal + TF2 ( + Peggle if you like that) is still a very nice price. That quite a lot of stuff (which should last you a while) for a good price (compared to other games). There's so many games nowadays who last you 15-25hours and that's all, at least with the orange box you get some good SP games + a very nice MP games (which alone will last you many many many hours).

The price standalone is definitely too big (even tho the game is worth that price) but that's why I said, the Orange Box isn't that pricey. 50$ is well worth it considering you get some great games, TF2 alone has a near-unlimited life if you like the game. Being MP gives it a very good longevity, and the coming updates are gonna help make it interesting for even a longer time.

But 50$ for the games is really not that bad, I've seen many games offer less in content for more $$$. =/
(I gotta say I didn't care for the HL2 games in the orange box, the HL2 serie is becoming less and less interesting for me with each sequel)

DRM and Starforce hinders piracy... and if not so, they are sometimes quite buggy on some computers.

I find that somewhat hard to believe.

Elaborate.

Please keep in mind that DRM has had a shaky track record, and Starforce....well warez groups such as Reloaded, Vitality, Immersion and others, on numerous occasions reverse-engineered this so-called "protection". Plus, SF PR is absolutely terrible, and any user faith in it has deteriorated. Then we have the Securom/Bioshock scenario.

Lets start from the top

1) Enforcing Internet access for single player games. This is flawed, since a) the games are single player and thus logically, don't require Internet access. b) creates havoc if you don't have a Internet connection for some reason.
2) Forced updates. Thus, removing any user control, and letting Valve perform operations on your games on a whim. With you having zero control over how things are done.
3) Bloat. Steam is bloated. I don't want any bloated **** running on my PC, thank you very much.
4) Reliance on DRM servers. Remember the first time HL2 was released? Do we want a repeat of that happening?

Took about six months for Starforce 3 to be cracked when Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was released with that protection. I still remember it clear as day. Usually, cracks wouldn't take 6 months to do, and of course that wasn't much of a hindrance, but it still... hindered.
