Boycott Games for Windows - Live

Even if a gamer surrenders his soul for the attached fees to Microsoft; he may not even be able to purchase a subscription because the Live service is only available in 26 countries out of the 257 countries. This means that gamers from 231 countries are currently unable to purchase gold subscriptions even if they want to.

These two main issues put the future of online PC gaming at serious risk. This is what convinced us someone needed to start a boycott campaign against the Games for Windows – Live service. This became imminent to preserve online gaming and gamers rights. Of course Microsoft is a multi-millionaire corporation and they probably won’t care about this boycott, but game developers and publishers are more vulnerable to boycotts, and therefore we will target them instead. Sega, Eidos and THQ already signed to bring more Games for Windows – Live titles. The clock is ticking, now it’s the time to stop it.

Some of the points they bring are pretty stupid (comparing a MMO to GWL? the f? Complaining about protection used? That doesn't have anything to do with GWL, it existed long before and is completely unrelated) but GWL is still bad.

I'm not sure boycotting will have any effect tho...
Instead of saying "yeah, we lost money because of that sh!t" they'll simply say "yeah, we lost money because people pirate our games, let focus on console and forget PCs...".

GWL is something that should go away, but boycotting alone? Not sure that would be enough. They'll just find ways to explain why sales went down, while not admitting it was GWL. Especially if MS pay them to keep using it and make up for money lost in sales.

(and I won't boycott Bioware, nuhu... I thought being bought by EA made them avoid GWL anyway? That's what was announced...)

Other than Juiced 2 and Mass Effect, none of the other games appeal to me.
And the two games I mentioned, I'm not in a hurry to buy. I have too many PC games to play after I get my PC upgraded, which will happen soon.

I doubt that would be the solution, since people pirate console games as well. IMO, i think they would lose more money 'cause console games cost more.

The point of that boycott tho is that "ohhh live on PC is baaaadddd, it ruins Lan, free Multi and blablabla", boycott isn't focusing on consoles.

And I wasn't talking that it would promote pirating, simply that they'd use it as a excuse as to why sales are going down instead of admitting a boycott.

I thought it is going to be other emulator ---> Boycott Advance but it is not. It's confused and maybe he should rename other one to avoid the confusion ?

once again....people overreact for nothing.

Who gives a **** about auto-matchmaking? Get off your lazy ass and use the server browser
Who gives a **** about achievements? No one looks at them
Who gives a **** about Live's friend functionality? Steam community or Xfire is much better.

There's all that but for me, the worst in Live for Windows, is the useless hook that runs in the background just for the Gamertag thingy, it's there only to eat resources, the fact that saves are saved online (ISP down? Start from scratch), and the fact that's it's removing dedicated servers, they want to make it fully p2p ala Xbox Live.

Live for Windows needs to die ASAP.

This is not so much an issue on the PC side.
Microsoft will implement their master plan. Gamers will LOL and play other games or use cracks to play the MS games on 3rd party servers. MS will go, "crap, that didn't work" and return to business as usual.

People who don't want to have their saves dependent of the Online service and who won't use the various online stuff (achievements and all) can simply create a offline account.

That's what I used to do (since I'm not gonna subscribe to anything and don't care about GWL) and it worked fine, I could unplug my internet and it didn't affect my game at all, it would just save and load from my PC.

I've heard of people losing their saves tho, so beware.

(don't start with online account and then go offline, I didn't try but chances are you'll simply won't be able to use the same saves)
