How is the 360 doing lately?

Is the failure rate going down? Is it safer to buy a new 360? or does it have the same rate of failure as it did 6 months ago?

'm thinking of buying one in a year, Mar 2009, after the digital cable becomes standard.

AFAIK, they are safer, it depends if you buy a old one (that has been in stock for a long time in a store somewhere) or a new one (with improved stability and less failures).

The model you buy matters too, Elite 360 have a very low failure rates, the more you spend when you buy the 360, the safer it should be. (they use the one with the less errors when tested for Elites)

But overall, they fixed stuff in the past years, as long as you don't get a 360 that has been rotting on a shelf of a store for 2 years, it should be safer than it used to be.

Well I'll buy the model better than the arcade. I want at least a "standard" 360 with a decent hard drive. The 31it3 is out of my price range.

I plan on getting a new one, probably from Electronics Boutique, I'll see if I can afford the extended warranty. I probably won't be able to afford it.

I have 13 months to see what happens.

XBOX360 Still has the RROD.. "the Red Ring of Death" if you dont want to waste a money buying another one..

besides.. there are other reliable console there... Wii and ps3...just buy one of those..

Sony is fame for a great console design and reliable system...

BUY a PS3 since XBOX360 is doom because of the media format..and for better investment..

Extended warranty aren't really great, usually are a rip-off.

But I thought MS offered a 3 years warranty? Basically, they announced (sometime in 2007) that they were gonna replace, free of charge, any 360 who had the RROD failure. They announced that at the same time as they announced incoming improvements to the 360 to make it more stable (like adding a second GPU heatsink, using other material that are more sturdy, ect).

Dunno if it has been reduce to 13 months since then, or maybe 13 months is for any problem and the 3 years is ONLY for the RROD.

You could try asking the store where you'll buy it, but don't get the extended warranty, those things are usually a big rip-off.

The RROD situation has been improved greatly, it "still has it" but every console "still has" problems, the Wii and PS3 have faulty hardware sometime too, it's impossible to completely make the RROD completely disappear, even in the best case scenario the RROD would still happen 1% of the time.

And Nintendo has a better "fame" for reliability than Sony, friends who worked in stores where console would run all day (to serve as "demos" for customers) would tell me about how many times a day they would have to restarts console, the Gamecube (and now the Wii) was always the most reliable.

The PS2 was reliable too, but it was only average, nothing to be "famous" about.
(the first Xbox was simply horrible tho, the 360 isn't as bad, especially since the past months)

He wouldn't have to "waste money buying another one" since MS replace them, for free, they pay shipping charge most of the time too, so he would only have to wait between one week to one month to receive a brand new one.

Buying a Wii or a PS3 won't help him play games that are released on the 360, if he wants to buy a 360 he obviously has reasons to do so.

The 360 is NOT doomed because of the media format, the media format only dooms the media side, NOT THE GAME SIDE...
As such, the 360 is not doomed, just because HD-DVD is doomed doesn't mean the console is, HD-DVD is still a effective game format. People who buy the 360 to play games and not to watch movie are unaffected by HD-DVD failure.

PS3 : A gaming console and a hype machine all in one.

It's nice of you to support the PS3, but don't start preaching another console when the guy asks for one console, not others. It's like a scientologist going to a church trying to usher people to follow him while they have no interest in doing so.

If you want to give the pro of the PS3 in a "360 or PS3?" thread, go for it. If people ask for opinions between two consoles, THEN it's a good idea.

But when a guy ask for a simple question on the 360 with no mention of the PS3, it's just completely off-topic to start bashing the console (with pretty moot point) to try and make another one look good.

(PS : Play B3yond doesn't mean anything, the PS3 offers the same thing the PS2 offered, only in better quality, you don't "play beyond" anymore than you already did when playing on your PS2, or on any console for that matter. You play in front of your screen, that's all. The PS3 doesn't offer anything to "play b3yond", it's only a meaningless catchy sentence to try and make people thing the PS3 has something other consoles don't.)

The PS3 is nice, but this was VERY uncalled for.

its not adviceable to BUY a XBOX360...

first and for most..even if a MS said something about the warranty...
MS dont have a office here.. and retailers and shop wont give a warranty since.. theyll have that problem exporting another one from the US..

Believe me MS should have stayed on the PC industry... yeah you can play a XBOX360 with a month or so... when u got the RROD thing... its bye bye time..
actually i dont want that feeling that im playing a console and worrying if my console will have that RROD thing or not...some who has a XBOX360 was force to turn off there console early since the primary problem that pertains to RROD is the over heating of the console itself....

GO for PS3 a relieable system..NO PIRACY.. UNLIMITED ONLINE PLAY FOR FREE.. and A GOOD INVESTMENT FOR A BLUE RAY PLAYER(Since it is the cheapest BLUE ray Player in the MArket today)

Nicolai, you obviously need to educates yourself on the matter :


The overheating problem has been fixed with heatsink added to the console and various measures taken to reduce heat.

The 360 is famous for more than simply shooters, but you don't seem to care much for that, you probably didn't even bother to look. The first Xbox was mainly shooters, the 360 has a larger panel of games.

"Play for a month or so"?
No, that's wrong, the 360 can last way more than a month, especially now. Saying it breaks in a month is just blowing things out of proportions, a lot.

1. Microsoft has a 3 year warranty on the system and the newer systems don't have this problem that I know of.

i have 2 XBOX360 that have that RROD thing and im not planing to buy a buy and waste for another one.... and a country such as ours there no MS support office where i can excahnge my RROD system.. and not the only one having this problem... so with asian country...

ill just stick with my console..

i do like lost odyssey but its not enough for me to BUY another XBOX360

MS should give an evidence about resolving the problem before a buy another xbox360... 2 xbox360 is enough for me...

Well, they gave evidence a while ago, they replaced some materials that was used who would break too easily (it wouldn't always tolerate the heat it had to take in) and they added a second heatsink to the GPU to reduce the heat in the console.

They did various other small stuff too since then. The CPU is manufactured in 65nm too, but I guess the effect of that must be pretty small (the CPU was probably not what produced the most heat).
