Anything you guys can suggest? Just to let you know, my preferred brands of CD/DVD-ROM drives (in descending order) are Lite-On, Plextor, Pioneer and AOpen. Also, I refuse to buy anything made by Creative. Their sound cards suck, their optical drives suck, and I just can't forgive them for what they did to Aureal.
Maybe a little late... this might be a great choose:

LG DRD 8160-B

It's 16x DVD read, 48x CD-ROM read; reads subchannels (at least, using alcohol 120%). And, with firmware update from this page, or this one, it's rpc-1. It's pretty reliable, truly 48x in CD reading (it allows me 'on the fly' copys at 24x on my cd-rw).

Ah!, my two drives support subchannel reading, i think both of them have been mentioned:

LG DRD 8160-B | LG CD-RW 8240-B

Have fun!!

Cool

I use my plextor CD RW and thats no problem on reading subchannel data. It's a PlexWriter 40/12/40A. But my Sony 48x CDROM and Pionner DVD 116R doesn't support subchannel data reading.

If you fell slower using physical CD/DVD ROM, why don't you using virtual CD/DVD ROM that support subchannel data like Daemon Tools [www.daemon.-tools.de]? You can make the CD image with CloneCD [www.elby.de] and use it with ePSXe without need to fear slower access [because this will depend on your hard drive speed].

What is the significance of being able to use the subchannel reader? I've been able to run it using my IODATA CRWD-AB20J though.

fatality, mostly CD protection are stored in subchannel data. If you want to make the ISOs then you need a reader that capable to read subchannel data for 1:1 copies.

You can check your IODATA CRWD-AB20J capability in http://www.elby.ch/english/products/...writers/a.html.

The use of subchannel checking for commerical CD copy protections is becoming a less used technique. The latest SafeDisc 2 and SecuROM versions almost totally ignore the subchannels. Yet for PSX protection (Libcrypt) being able to write +96 subchannels is quite helpful.

Well, I doubt that the drive is your problem, toshiba always makes very good cd readers and it should have no problem reading a PSX disc, even if it is copy protected. I would reccomend that you check to see if your plug-ins are configured correctly, try a different plug-in, or try making a CD image of the game you are trying to play and run it from that.

LiteON drives have some of the best writing quality available. I reccomend RAW DAO+96 for writing, and RAW+96 of reading. I don't know about in the PSX plugin, just do what ever that works.

Re: List of cdrom/dvd models supporting subchannel reading.

LiteOn CD RW have a good quality both in writing and reading. Only one complain about them as my brother's shop sell it : loud when spinning the disc .

Yes both reading and writing in the LiteON drives are very good. If you want the best in reading the Toshibas DVD's are the best IMO.

It's from Elby version, with CloneCD. But, AFAIK that CloneCD compability CD RW list isn't correct [about 1 and 2 stars] of EFM encoding [I test it myself], I would not thinking Toshiba is the best until I can proove it by myself.

EFM encoding only makes a difference in the writing stage. Yes it is true that Toshiba isn't the best at CD writing qulaity, but its reading capabilities are quite good. Really though it doesn't matter, as long as the drive supports RAW +96 reading it can do just about anything.

For EFM [as you said], its useless for CD reader and only needed by CD burner. But, in many case [almost all] CD reader have a big problem reading CD that "un-supported" by CloneCD.

For Toshiba, Elby [in their Help files] stated the best reader, not writing. And thats for DVD ROM, not CD ROM.
