Colour me newbie ... but I'm not sure I've got it.

I have xxxxxx, and it works fine with FF9, wich requires subchannel support.
Do you mean FF9 needs subchannel support to work at all, or does that mean FF9 works without PPF file if you have subchannel support?

Anyway, my drive calls itself a E-IDE CD-ROM 36X/AKW, Firmware revision U22 in the device manager and 36X MTRP written on the front of the drive and it does work with FF9 (PAL), the relevant PPF file, and subchannel support (read from CDROM) checked.

The later. PPF files were needed before ePSXe supported subchannel reads.

I'm looking for suggestions for a good slot-loading 16x/48X (or better) DVD-ROM drive, and I'd prefer one that can not only read subchannels, but can also have its region changed (through a firmware flash or otherwise) to Region-0 (aka. regionless.) Anything you guys can suggest? Just to let you know, my preferred brands of CD/DVD-ROM drives (in descending order) are Lite-On, Plextor, Pioneer and AOpen. Also, I refuse to buy anything made by Creative. Their sound cards suck, their optical drives suck, and I just can't forgive them for what they did to Aureal.

Took a while to get back, but Pioneer A03 (DVD-R drive) works with subchannle. It also works great through a Maxtor PCI IDE UDMA100 controller card.
