Odd problem with PS1 Controller

I have a Playstation 1 controller (the ones without the analog sticks) plugged to the computer trough a Super joy box 5 pro. I configured the controls on ePSXe 1.6.0 perfectly and started final fantasy tactics, everything worked fine until i was prompted to give the main character a name. Square, triangle, X,0, start, select, L1, L2, R1,R2, stopped working while the d-pad remained completely functional (in other words the game did not freeze).

I then proceded to try with armored core, i started a mission everything functioned delightfully and then when the mission ended, you see the income/expenses report and i could not skip it because the start button stopped working again. I saved state restarted ePSXe changed the start button from the controller to the keyboard letter 'v', loaded state and skipped the report screen, started another mission, controller working fine, i finish the mission and now as expected the buttons in the ps1 controller stopped working, no big deal since i configured ePSXe so that start is 'v', well this time the keyboard also did not work despite the fact that the keyboard and the controller were working perfectly during the course of the mission.

Sorry for the long post but i have absolutely no idea how to solve this.

Video plug in: Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.76
Sound: Eternal SPU Plugin Lite 1.41
CdRom: SaPu's CD-ROM Plugin 1.0
The controller i use its a PS1 without analog sticks

Computer Specs:
Cpu: Athlon 64 3800+
Video: Geforce 7800 GT
Ram: 4X512 mb kingston Hyper X

the same thing happens to me, with all 3 of my psx/ps2 controllers, with the up button in some games/menus such as fftactics menu, saga frontier memory card menu, and grandia menu

Try another emulator (PSXeven, SSSPSX, PCSX) with a pad plugin, or try pSX.

Can you try another controller or adapter to see if it's one/both of those?
