Re: FF7 PC vs PS

FF7 PC version is definitely more stable i.e no/less bugs compared to FF7 on ePSXe. However, I didn't quite liked the midi'sh music on the PC version. Plus you can't use savestates in the PC version, can you

Most people prefer the PS version.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Get the psx version. The PC version doesn't handle too well with today's video cards. I tried the trial version on my pc and I could only play it in software mode at a very low resolution. The psx version can be played at high resolutions and enhanced graphics using Pete's plugins in epsxe.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

OK. Downpoints of the PC version:
  • On XP, FF7 PC exibits a number of crashes, such as the chocobo race crash unless you get the patch avaliable from here
  • On any decent machine today the minigames will run ridiculously fast. There exists no fix for that
  • The default music is ****e. You need to go out and download a music patch to get any decent quality music
  • Max res is 640x480
  • Godawful video quality
Downpoints of the PSX version
  • No perspective correction
  • Lower resoloution textures
  • Music cannot be further improved (I use the orchestral ST when I play on the PC)
  • Numerous difficult to solve 'battle swirl' glitches
  • Ideally needs to be running from an ISO.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Unless you have older graphic card such as Voodoo or like my old Intel 740i 3D Express, you can play it well in your PC.

I have no problem [once I play it with my old rig] with that, but many ppl complained. I didn't tried it with ePSXe yet, but I think it will have better graphics with my current [higher spec] PC.

Here are some screenshots - you can compare graphics quality.
First is PC, second PSX on Pete's OGL, third PSX on P.E.Op.S.
Lord Kane, what is that music patch you're talking about?

Ficedula's FFMusic. It allows you to use your own MIDIs/MP3s/PSFs/ whatever Winamp can handle.

That second one doesn't really show the benefits of perspective correction. Try showing a battle shot quite zoomed out.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

I have the ps version and I've seen my friend play the pc version and I think overall the ps version is better. He had to run it in software mode and it looked ok but ran like crap at 640x480 (he was running it on a celeron 850). The movies looked awful and the music was ok. The music in the ps version I think was pretty good and while the movies still didn't look too good, they were better looking than the pc version (just my opinion) I don't know what they did differently with the movies but the ones in ff8 looked 3x better than the ones in ff7.

I have the psx version and the pc version. I broke the PC cd's on accident, but didn't care to buy another copy.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Thanks for all the help, tips, advice, and info. I have not seen such a response from a message board in a quite a while. Nice.

I think my video card is enough to handle whatever it can throw at me, but I'm not sure.
On the issue of music, can't the music be turned off on either version? and then I can just play whatever elsewhere.
And the Battle Swirl Glitch, what exactly does that do? if all it does is make the swirl get mesd up, I don't mind. I never liked that thing...
Oh, and I probably would put it on an emulated drive.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

oh. i think i can live without that. thanks. I got pete's gfx plugins, scph1001, and an image of FF7 disc 1, so i'm 'bout to try it out.

--edit
one last thing. this isn't going to work or feel right until i get a PSX controller hooked up, is it?

--again

It runs much too fast. I tried all three of pete's plugins, OpenGL ran the slowest (best), and everything's still zippin across everywhere. I've tried different screen resolutions as well. I dunno what else to do. Imma try Kane's settings on his site.

much better. gracias. i think it was the FPS needin limited.

Don't say that you're downloading the image.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Niektory nice shots. Well I have FF7 psx version. And I think its great. They are so similar that If you have one dont bother getting the other. Just stick with PC or get an emulator.

I have both only because I like to mess with my games. In PC ver you can do more funny things, but you will also encounter more problems. Hey, I just made it play my own music in certain moments. It's great! :guitar:

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

IMO, unless you can play Direct3D mode with the PC version, play the PSX version.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Oh, thanks, but I'm done playing FF7. I beat Ruby Weapon and got the gold chocobo for doing so, that's all I hadn't done on the console before.

Again, thanks for all the advice and info.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

I got the PC version working very well on my computer. Im using D3D for video and 640x480 full screen and its running very nice and smooth. I have a newer system so all i had to do was get the patch. So far I have yet to run into any problem while playing the game.
