Re: FF7 PC vs PS

I really didn't like the music in the playstation version (example: Aeris' theme sounds terrible imho 14 seconds into it). Well, it's kind of like this... when the game uses instruments that are existent in General MIDI, I prefer to use the Yamaha Software Synthesizer that came with the game (or just cramming in a nice soundfont and a patch to get the OWA choir to work), but in songs like "J-E-N-O-V-A" and "You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet" the psx pulls off a little better. Still, overall I prefer the music a lot with the YSXG mentioned above or a nice soundfont (like the freeware Chaos Bank soundfont).

And with all the fixes that were put into the PC version, well.... the only real downside I think is even worth bothering about is the speed of the minigames, but people are working on a patch for fixing that as we speak. I'm too lazy to check for an exact link, but I saw development of such a thing being discussed on the forums of Qhimm's site. (http://www.qhimm.com)

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

the minigames run stupidly fast on the pc version, but apart from that i prefer it over the psx version. it just looks a lot better. sound is obviously rubbish midi but chances are if you're a final fantasy fan that you've got the ost anyway to lob on in the background.

just get FFmusic and the FF7 psf's to make your pc version have the PSX songs ;0

See, you seem to neglect to mention the fact that the game was designed with that exact music in mind, not some crappy soundfont replacement. PSX VERSION ALL THE WAY.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

I didn't read all the posts, but remember, more of your buddies have FF7 on the PS1, than on the PC. Its easier to take your memcard than a floppy disk.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

To the person who said the game won't recognize their Radeon 9700: Go download the TNT patch off of the website. Yes, I said the NVIDIA TNT patch. Install it. Run the new config program and click on the Graphics tab. Click the NVIDIA checkbox and select TNT. The need for 8-bit Paletted Textures magically disappears and the game runs on any modern video card. I just wouldn't use any form of anti aliasing or anisotropic filtering as it makes the game look like ass.

To the one who said MIDI sucks: You need to hear those "crappy MIDIs" play on my computer with the 180MB in sound fonts I have.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

I prefer the PC version. The menus and battle graphics look great.

How about FF8 PC vs PSX? I only have the PSX version.

As far as FF8 PC vs PSX goes, the PC version comes out on top IMO, as, unlike FF7, the FMVs were re-rendered in a higher quality format, and bugs were minimal.
The only real downer of the PC version is the poor quality Directmusic synth (fixed in an onofficial patch that allows normal MIDI playback), and the fact that it is so obviously a console port. If I were porting FF* to PC, I would modify the code to take advantage of hte fact that the PC has a mouse, but that's just me.

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

Well, the annoying 640x480 res in the PC version can be remedied by FSAA. Most cards today have that capability, so it shouldn't be a bother.

I looked at the screens on page 1 of this thread; I noticed the PS shots having a higher color dept, which makes it look better.
hmm...I wonder if that's the same with MGS...

Re: FF7 PC vs PS

yeah but MGS doesnt play on my PC for some reason...even the demo. the menu's are all transparent. meaning, i leave one menu and i can still see what the other one looked like. after 2 menus its nearly impossible to navigate, let alone configure my controller

The main problem with ff7 PC, is that it only supports proprietary glide graphics, and unless youve got a old voodoo3 hangin around you wont be using it.

*a big thanx to nVidia for buying their sorry asses and using OpenGL!*
