Xenogears, Getting sound and Graphics problems :(

Hello all!

May need a hand with getting Xenogears to work with ePSXe .
Im using Petes Open GL plugin 1.53 and Petes Dsound Audio Driver 1.11.

When i start xenogears i get an effect of a huge wall of muddled colors that go towards the screen. Then i get the menu. When im moving around the cursor the sound sounds like loud thumps. When i start the game the Video sequence at start is another muddle of those colors then the music when the first intro text is up sounds like a bunch of loud thumps too After that its impossible to see whats happening due to the layers of muddled colors moving around

May need a hand with what plugins and what settings in those to use to get the game to run in a playable state

Thanks!

Antic.

Could you post your system specs. so we know what hardware you are running (ie. graphics card, sound card, cpu etc.) Oh yeah, and welcome to the boards.

ops sorry

Geforce2 Mx400 32
aureal vortex a3d soundcard
p2 450
256 megs ram
and im playing from ISO.

Think that was the important specs

I think i got sound to work somewhat now only the graphics left. But still unsure if my sound settings are right. I have all the boxes at the first setup screen at the sound options checked.

And thanks for the welcome

Antic

edit: Let me add that i played some of xenogears on my brothers PSX (when he lets me use it lol) and when i tryed it in VGS for example i could clearly hear that some channels of the sound effects are missing and some sound dreadfull. For example engine noice was louder than the music and the graphics was worse than on the TV set :P ePSXe will hopefully make the game work as it does at the PSX, i hope :P The colors effect i mentioned earlier seems to be a corrupted version of the menu blurr effect at start and why its equaly corrupted during the initial gear combat scenes after the first text i dont know cus i dont think it uses blurring there And the movies didint work at all

My friend has currently got my copy of Xenogears so I will get it back from him to try it out again (I am at work anyhows). If I remember correctly you may need to enable full vram primitives or framebuffer textures to get certain parts of the intro screen looking correct (I think Pete's OpenGl plugin would be the best for you graphics card, maybe you could try Pete's DirectX one too??? - I use Pete's OpenGl on my GeForce2 GTS). As for the sound, I will have to get back to you on that one, maybe you could try Iori's or Andy's to see how you get on. Hope this has been some help to you.

You might want to check these threads too:
http://www.ngemu.com/forums/search.p...der=descending , since some people have reported problems running Xenogears, eg. you may have to switch back to VGS or FPSe to get past certain scenes. Especially read the Xenogears, Black Screen thread because this sound similar to your video problem.

Did not change anything Let me try to explain more in detail.

I got those options turned on with the problem remaining Let me list everything i have enabled, it may be something that shouldnt be there (atelast i hope its that easy).

What i have turned on in Petes OpenGL plugin:
RESOLUTION & COLORS:

Windowed mode 800 x 600
32bit color depth

Option: Change desktop settings OFF
Option: Keep PSX aspect ratio OFF

TEXTURES:

Texture Quality: R8 G8 B8 A8 - Best Colors, more ram needed

Cashing type: 3. Palettized. Can be fast in certain games but only a few graphics cards support it (geforce)

Filtering: 2. Extended - Removes Black Borders

FRAMERATE:

Option: Show FPS Display on startup OFF
Option: Use FPS Limit ON
Option: Use Frame Skipping OFF

Option: Set at Autodetect FPS/Frameskipping limit ON

COMPATIBILITY:

Off screen Drawing: 3. Enchanced - shows more stuff

Framebuffer textures: 2. GFX card buffer, can be slow

Option: Alpha Multipass ON
Option: Mask Bit OFF
Option: Advanced Blending ON

MISC:

Option: Scanlines OFF
Scanline brightness: 0
Option: Line Mode OFF
Option: Unfiltered frambuffer updates ON
Option: Color dithering ON
Option: Full Vram Primitives ON
Option: Special Game Fixes OFF

Thats it.

The music seems slow to me compared to what it is on PSX or VGS.

Could you post a screenshot? (you can press F8 whilst running and the screenshot will be saved to the snap folder within ePSXe's folder). (I will try to get my game back this weekend so I try to reproduce the problem and let you know what settings I am using)

oh i found the convert option in ACDSEE. But they are still too big for this board so ill post a web link to em instead.

This picture is when the animated logo for Xenogears should be after the square text logo.

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL001.JPG

This is when the fade and blur effect from the animated logo to the menu screen is suposed to be.

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL002.JPG
http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL003.JPG

This is when you are choosing options on the menu. Totaly black background.

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL004.JPG

This is when the "i am alpha and omega.." intro movie is supposed to play

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL005.JPG

This is the starting text, lots of glitches at the right side and text dont write out at a cosntant speed plus that music is much slower than it should be.

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL006.JPG
http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL007.JPG

And from the gera combat at start, this is very slow with slow sound and music that has snail speed.

http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL008.JPG
http://hem.passagen.se/andreasg/PSOGL009.JPG

Im at a loss what i should do to fix this It almost seems to me like it cant play the movie sequenses as the intro animated logo is a movie sequence and so is the main intro. Also why its SOO slow compared to other emus is also a questionmark.

The slowness may be due to having framebuffer textures on or full vram primitives on (you can toggle them on and off whilst playing by using the on screen menu - press del when playing, use page up and page down to choose option, press end to toggle the option, FB = frame buffer, FV - full vram).

As for the corruption, have you tried installing a later driver for your video card? I have not seen anything like that before

I got through Xenogears using Petes Direct3d, and the normal Epsxe sound plugin.

Try Pete's D3D or Pete's Soft plugin, see if any of them looks properly.

in petes software driver the FMVs are still looking the same way. But i get the background at the menu now not just a black background as on the screens i posted above.

The D3D got the FMVs not working and the same problem with black backgrounds in the menu. But now there is also a grey box around the cursor

I tryed to choose PAL on the country setup in ePSXe instead of automatic. And instead of silence during the corrupted FMV i get a short period of sound at start as the FMV is about to start but then stops as its still corrupted. At NTSC its silent but same result.

Can this be some conflict with the game from PAL or NTSC versions? Like in FF9? Its strange cus This copy of xenogears works fine with VGS save some sound problems ingame. But FMVs run fine. So im at a loss what might be wrong. I went to a friend who owns Bleem and tryed it at bleem and got the same corrupted FMVs there. (glad i didint buy bleem too ).

Grateful for any tips you can have

Hi Antic, I tried Xenogears at the weekend with the same graphics and sound plugins as you and I found no problems at all on my system. The only thing I can think of now is maybe the cdrom plugin. I use the core winnt/2k plugin (on XP) when i tested this. I really cannot think of anything else to try except maybe trying other CD's (what happens when you try to run CD 2?)
