FF9 problem

I am trying to run US FF9 from original CD and from iso and I get the same problem. The game starts and the intro movie plays fine, but when the menu comes up, continue is selected and the controller doesn't respond. So basically all I can do is sit and watch the little slideshow that comes up (virue,...)

I am using espxe v 1.5.1 with pete's d3d version 1.6 (set to nice with the screen res at 640x480) and pete's dsound version 1.14

my system config is:
PIII 500
TNT2
256 RAM
Sound Blaster Live!
Gravis Gamepad USB
Windows XP Pro

any suggestions?

First make sure your gamepad is well configured,then,while in-game,press F4 or F5,that should do the trick
