Smile Final Fantasy 4 graphics discrepancies

I've seen a couple of discrepancies from the SNES version. Some tiles are missing, and some tiles which were meant to be transparent are not transparent.

As far as I know, this game is actually an SNES emulation on the PSX. Was it a perfect port, or do these things show up even on a real PSX?

I've attached a set of screenshots. The images at the left are from ZSNES, and the ones at the right are from ePSXe.

What are your thoughts?

I think that's an emulator bug rather than a PSX bug.

I agree. It's probably an emulation bug. What does FF4 look like on a playstation?

It's probably due to yoru graphics plugin. If you're used a hardware accelerated plugin (OpenGL, D3D, Glide), change it to a software one and see how you go.

I took those shots with the P.E.Op.S. soft GPU.

In any case, I ran the game under Bleem, VGS, AdriPSX and ePSXe, and got the same results in terms of graphics. That's what led me to think that maybe that's how it would look like on a real PSX. Anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

No it is not SNES emulation for the PSX. The game was rewritten for the PSX (ported over if you will) but the graphics were left the same. I guess Square felt that people would so happy to have FF4 on PSX that they wouldn't care that much about the dated graphics.
Shadow Lady, the graphics on ePSXe can be filtered and made to look nicer w/3d type enhancements even though it not a 3D game. But if you run it in software (like PEOPS GPU), then graphics will look very much like the Original PSX graphics. Maybe we should all wait for Nickk's next GL GPU w/2X SAI and Super Eagle modes. Either of those modes would make this game look very very nice indeed.
sincerely,

Actually, I already ran that using P.E.Op.S. (see my post above). In any case, I find it really weird that all the emulators I have here give the same graphic results. Anyway, maybe someone who has ran it on a real PSX can give this issue some light.

On using 3D plugins for 2D games, well, that might work... sometimes. Often, the filtering offered by 3D plugins actually look inferior to the screen smoothing of a software plugin. This is because the 2D sprites are most of the time filtered as separate textures and this results in a "detached" look to them. Best stick to the screen smoothing of 2D plugins, if you ask me.

I know this reply will not address your original question but I have found that Kayuzza soft 1.7 works really well on SNES ports. I am looking forward to v1.8 to be reeased soon.

hmmm

So far we call it an emu bug...the 2 areas most noticable are the black borders on the ship....and in the first castle..the lake surrounding the castle looks like sand...If you play the game on a real PSX the errors do not appear....regardless of what emu or plugin used they will appear.....

Minor issue though...only the picky will be bothered...

Thanks for that insight. And yes, I can be picky sometimes. Hehehe.

Here's an idea - switch to Pete's OpenGL and turn on Keep PSX aspect ratio. I often find that can help things a bit in 2D games. See what happens with FF4.
