Is there a way to close the epsxe DOS window?

You can't close it, because you need it for running your games

that pretty window with the dragdown menus is just a frontend for a DOS program. the launcher just hides it, doesnt it?

Yep.. If you play in windowed mode, you can still see the dos command window even with the launchers..
