Final Fantasy IX input problem

Final Fantasy IX loads up perfectly(I see the whole intro etc.), but, I have no inputs(I press buttons, nothing happens). I'm using an older microsoft sidewinder gamepad, but I've also tried just using the keyboard(USB), to no effect. Also, Xenogears works fine, so it is a problem with FFIX specifically. I've tried using it as both an ISO and off the CD, to no effect. I'm at a loss, and I can't find any information online that has anything to do with THIS kind of problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

press f4,f4 or f5 then f4.. Fixes most controller and memcard problems..
