Disc ids and save states
I'm a frequent victim of save state problems -- had them quite frequently in Chrono Cross and FF9. From what i gather from this forum, as well as the unofficial faq, disc switching can cause sstate problems since the disc ids have changed.
However I've discovered that changing the CDR plugin can also cause sstate problems. Due to some strange reasons, my games run into problems on a certain CDR plugin that can be resolved by switching to another one, eg an mdec that won't play on Pete's CDR plugin works on the W2K cd plugin and vice-versa. Whenever I make the switch, the sstates kind of "de-associate" themselves from my current game (pressing F2 brings up empty sstate slots). I've tried this strategy : make a new sstate, check the filename of the new sstate in the manager (SLXXX-XXX something), then rename the filenames (not just their names) of the original sstates to the new convention. This frequently does NOT work.. although I had a hilarious episode where i actually managed to associate a chrono cross sstate with the FF9 3rd cd.. and furthermore it was actually playable (only for a single scene, of course). Unfortunately fooling around too much with the sstates can also disable state saving totally for my current game (not only are the sstates empty, pressing F1 does not create a new one). I *think* this can be resolved by restarting the computer. Changing CD drives can also cause somewhat erratic problems. Sometimes, when I switched drives (again, for the same reasons as the CDR plugins above... certain things only work in different CD drives) the set of sstates that were previously "lost" re-appeared. Does changing CD drives change the disc ids as well? How do i retrieve a disc id, other than checking the sstate filenames? And where do the disc ids come from in the first place anyway? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Follow-up
I have some extra information which I forgot to add... usually my sstate filenames contain nice numbers like 010_95. When the sstate problems crop up, any new sstates I make have the numbers 999_99... I suspect this is due to a disc id screw-up (if such a thing is possible). Anyone?

Infact I have done a lot of researching on save states and I never ever faced a problem myself(though I have used about 30 save states from games that I dont have). As far as disc ids are concerned they are always shown when you see the contents of disc through "my computer" and your cd drive letter in windows. I would like to help in any other way about save states coz I just love them.
