zukeft, I guess that there has already been a discussion between the mods about that issue. If they had decided that publishing PSF music was illegal they would have already closed every thread about it. If I were you, I wouldn't be concerned about that issue
![]() BTW: There are lots of game music sites around there and none of them has ever been closed due to copyright violations. |

Hrmm... I forgot about that, the music doesn't run at all unless you use the original disc or run an ISO with Deamon's tools or the like. Sorry 'bout the dumb question

Technically they AREN'T illegal, They're just a part of a legal grey area that isn't neccasarilly legal or illegal, it's just that no descision has been reached.

What happens is if there's no game music soundtrack in sale for a particular game, does that mean the game music should be free for personal use, since no financial damge will result to the company (even better, it may do as an advertising of the game to potential customers)? Nobody knows for sure, if the company did not clarify it. Capcom US did say it's ok to allow hosting MP3s for their game music online (not as a license, in other words, this means 'ok for now until we say otherwise'). But no other company took the stand to say anything about it. If, however, there is a game music soundtrack available for sale, as many of the SquareSoft games does, the argument that it's okay to distribute it will subject to challenge. It's one thing that you own the game and rip the game music format yourself, another to distribute it on the web. I suspect Sony may not be against this as this probably won't hurt her business, but SquareSoft and other VGM publishers may think otherwise. This is always a grey area here about this copyright matter. Unless this is a free download gift for fans (or in computing case open source software/freeware), you mostly should have paid what you owns. |

One point about the legality is that easily availible soundtracks can actually help game sales. While I can't say I have bought a game based solely on music, the soundtrack has helped to solidify the decision before. As for gaming music cds, until they are available at chain stores, no real market exists for them.
Long live PSF!!!

Well, it's possibly less of an incentive to buy the soundtrack of PSFs once you have those PSFs, considering the quality are pretty good. So, if you don't even own the game nor soundtrack CD at all, the prospect of legality is more or less to the nay side, fairly speaking. Except for Squaresoft game soundtracks the market would be so small that few or no company will bother.

CaitSith2 optimized Neill's FF8 PSF set...
you may download it from my site. ![]() http://audigy.ath.cx:81/psf/ It's 3MB smaller than the original RAR. No big deal, but to those on dialup, it means about 12 minutes gained. :P |
