Final Fantasy fans and Geforce users might be in for some good news.

PCgamer Holiday 2002, Volume 9, Issue 13 Page 29

Final Fantasy XI announced: Nvidia and Square have teamed up to develop a geforce 4 ti: enhanced version of Final Fantasy XI for the PC. Currently , the massively multiplayer online RPG is set for launch only in Japan this November, But inside sources have confirmed that FF XI will eventually be released in the US

Just like 3dfx used too. Nvidia seems to be really good about working with game developers and getting Nvidia only features, While of course this is good for Nvidia. I wonder if it'll cut the nose off develops despite there face in the future, As it doesn't seem to be a problem lately with non Nvidia cards, aside from running games with tuned down features.

Interesting none the less

Oh great. Just when I am loking for a R300. ROTFLMAO!

Though knowing FFXI will be a P2P (pay to play) MMORPG, I will not purchase it.

Maybe Square might release a later patch after it's out or some kind of quick fix that will enable those features with Ati's cards.

I don't understand why developers would develop their software for a particular card. The entire point of DirectX is to have a single API to program for that's compatible with a wide range of cards.

Not that I would want to get this game anyways.

Well I think it may be "good" for me now. I don't think its paticularly good for the future, I don't want to be in the scenerio where I am now trying to play those old 3dfx stickered games in D3d because they simply don't work with ATI and Nvidia's newer cards.

I think it's a bad move from square, I don't think ppl would be buying ffxi anyway, and now they make it nvidia only?? now even those who planned to buy it and don't have an nvidia card are not going to buy it

Oddly enough Nvidia is pulling a lot of intels right now. getting exclusive rights to certain features in games. Similar to what Intel has done in the past.

a Similar scenerio would be Everquest 2 and Geforce 3 + Card only features and a Geforce FX shading specifically for the Geforce FX

well, I think the enhancements, are only for some features that the GF4ti have, not other card (right now) have at the mo ^^

Unhappy

Hmmm, this sound more like a "Bill Gates" to me. "If you want to play this game w/all the neat features, then you'd better have this card to play it with." Very bad move on Square and Nvidia's part. This will just make people angry w/them and will cause people to "turn their backs" on them. IMHO, not very smart at all.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

It sounds more like 3dfx and voodoos to me

seems like nVIDIA is starting to use 3dfx's technology

Reminds me of the Nintendo's motto, "Get N or get out". It's slightly unfair for gamers... but it seems as Square has been switching sides constantly. As long as there'll be a general game for us non-Geforce users, I'll be happy.

I'd like to see what the Ti enhanced version has too. If it's just a few more polygons, it just won't cut it.

Well it shoulkd also be noted that this article was very vague. But I do consider PCgamer a reliable source as far as PC news goes.

So whos to say what the features will be, It might be the same game but Geforce 4 Ti + users can turn on features that other users cannot.

Chris, you are scaring me.
Though I doubt PC games from well known companies like ID Software etc...
would go the way Square have.

Yeah, not to mention NWN. Tsk, tsk, it's such a shame. Especially considering the powerful pixel shader capabilities of the Radeon 8500/9000/9500/9700 cards.
