Version changes were finally released: Version 3.10 beta 3 1. WinRAR displays the progress bar when creating recovery volumes. 2. "Policy" key introduced in the previous beta can be placed also to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE has a higher priority than in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. 3. When unpacking several encrypted archives at once, console RAR proposes to reuse a password entered for previous archive. 4. If "Default folder for archives" and "Default folder for extracted files" fields in WinRAR settings are not blank, "Wizard" command uses these folders as default when creating or unpacking archives. 5. Bugs fixed: a) cursor was placed to a wrong position after "Extract To" command in the file mode; b) if "Test archived files" option was enabled in the default compression profile, "Convert" command tested created archives twice; c) "Comment" page in the archiving dialog did not work properly under Windows 9x/Me. |

Hmm thought this was only about emulation related news but I read the "General discussion" in the title . Anyway thats great and winrar rockz over winzip . Has better compression, supports compression of directorys and stuff like that. I don't get it why ppl still use winzip ???

Rar. is just better for compression. Zip is just conveniant. All there is too it. Even Windows XP has built in unzipping software. But I foresee rar becoming the next standard in about 2 years. Hell it took zip a while to catch on. Yes this isn't emulation news. I've said this before. But its a barrel I don't want to open. |

In the past 3 years, ACE got popularity (in warez scene) because its high compression rate. But recently RAR (with the introduction of 3.x) is gaining even more popularity (specially among developers) because its high compression and new features (ie. the compact SFX with installer look). Today many rar files are being distributed as exe. However, it will be hard for RAR to beat ZIP: Windows Me/XP include native support for zip, zip compress/decompress faster than rar, and most of the archives in the Internet are (and will stay) in ZIP. This is not a market analysis of compression tools and I may be wrong in some points, but this is my perception. |
