64bit CPU is useless without the driver.you will need a 64bit OS to take full advantage of it.

hmm.... what do you think would be my best option? Is there a 64 bit Vista yet?

I looked it up and is Windows XP professional the only windows os that runs 64 bit? I could probably get a copy off of ebay for under $100

It shouldn't confuse you. Use your windows disc that came with your computer and reformat your pc. When you are installing it there should be an option to install 64 bit vista. It's on your disc. Trust me.. when i was beta testing all the builds i downloaded had 64 bit also on the disc. So what to be confused about? Format and reinstall. Or call Gateway and say " I bought this blahblahblah and it is a 64 bit chip, where is my 64bit vista? They will say you need to reinstall windows. ..... if it's not on your disc then I would def call and complain to gateway. ey i answered your question. Here is a Blog directly from microsoft support at Satisfy Me : 64-bit Vista in the Ultimate package: Q&A with Jim Allchin (Seattle Times)

" Q: I just bought a new notebook computer with a 64 bit processor. I am eligible for the Express Upgrade to Vista. I have heard that the full retail versions of Vista will contain both 64 and 32 bit versions in the same package. Will this be the same for those of us who bought our computers before the full release? If not, please explain why. Thank you.
— Cheryl King, Edmonds

J.A.: If you bought a PC with a 32 bit OS installed (Windows XP home, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP media center edition) that is eligible for the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista, then your computer manufacturer should send the corresponding 32-bit version for Windows Vista. If you bought a PC with a 64 bit OS installed (Windows XP professions 64 bit edition) than you qualify for an upgrade to 64-bit version of Windows Vista Business. If you purchased a 32 bit OS on your new notebook and you would like to move to a 64 bit OS for Windows Vista please contact your computer manufacturer for fulfillment options.

-If you buy the retail version of Windows Vista, then you are licensed to use either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version. That said, we only include the 32-bit software in the package--- unless you buy the Windows Vista Ultimate (which includes both versions). If you purchase the retail product and you want the 64-bit versions, then you can contact Microsoft and we will send you a disk.-"

as you can see microsoft will help you out. You _are_ liscensed to use both versions.. so why are you so confused? JUMP on it and contact them or gateway and get your software!

When you buy Windows Vista, you can choose either version. When it comes with a PC you bought, it's either 32-bit or 64-bit.

yeah... since the vista was a version given to me by Gateway... I couldn't choose the version and I can't get a free version of the 64 bit... trust me I have been on the phone with both Microsoft and Gateway for hours on this topic and they just turned out to be just a bunch of fags

im pretty sure your serial key works for both versions though. They are interchangable between 32-bit and 64. Now all you need is get your hands on a 64 bit iso image and burn you a dvd. I can't tell you how on these forums.. but you can probably figure it out. <3

I am not 100% sure of this... but when I saw a copy of Windows Vista OEM. I saw 2 version of the same edition, the first 32-bit OS and the other 64-bit OS for the supported processors.

It seams that only retail version of the OS comes with both 32 and 64-bit OS.
