Unhappy Normal/Slowdown/Normal/Slowdown

Hello guys.

Have this slightly irritating problem with dolphin.
everytime i play a certain game the same thing occurrs.
I play normally for something like 15 seconds, then i experience slowdowns, then it goes normally again then slowdowns again etc.
What do you think the problem could be?
I have
MB:ASUS M2N-X Plus
CPU:Amd athlon 64 x2 6000+
500gb HD
NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GT
2GB Ram DDR2
Running on Windows XP 32

What can I do? Is it something emulation-related or not?
Thanks anyway in advance!

it happens here too. What i do is disable Optimize quantizers and Lock thread to core. Dunno why this happens, but by doing this i'm able to get constant framerates.

I think it has to do with CPU Usage, try increasing your page file, it might help.

Do you have the AMD dual core optimizer installed? Also, do you have some sort of speedstepping enabled? Also, perhaps are your temperatures getting too high? If so, it might be throttling you down due to heat.

I get the same problem actually, don't think it's an overheating issue as my CPU cooler is fairly efficient and speedfan doesn't report anything out of the ordinary. I've only experienced it in SSBM (that's the only game that runs at a speed where a slowdown could be noticed - others run slow to start with!). It slows down by about 50%, as soon as the game has finished and I'm back to the menu screens, everything's fine again, until about 20 to 30 seconds into the game where it goes sluggish again. It's still playable, but the slowdown is definitely noticeable.

I've got nothing running that would throttle anything.

Pentium D 950 @ 3.56GHZ.
3GB DDR2-667.
ATI HD2400.
Vista X64 Ultimate SP1
Experienced in as many Dolphin revs. as I can recall.

Not fantastic, I know, but high FPS is achievable for that 20 to 30 seconds at the start of the game.

It probably the emulator is executing more code in some parts of the game, which slows down the JIT.

That would make sense, yes, but when the slowdown takes place there's nothing more on the screen, no additional sound or anything like that. I can't see what 'more' there would be to emulate 10 seconds into a battle and 40 seconds into a battle when it's the same characters, textures, models, sounds. I could understand if it was a level with different stages or events where the content would be changing, but as far as I know that's not the case with a SSBM battle.

That said, some scenes are affected more than others, but that could be because those scenes are 'less involved' and run faster than others to start with and thus the slowdown has less of a visible effect. Next time I play, I'll try and note down some statistics to illustrate it.

You should profile while playing. See what code is being called a lot.

Can you elaborate? I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'profile'. I assume I'll need to use a clean debug build, I've been using a release build at the moment.

Geez guys. I thought i subscribed to this thread but i blatantly didnt.
And i was a tad sad thinkin that nobody was answering me.
Well thanks all of you. ill try and see what i can achieve.
THANKS!!

Ok, i already did "eliminate" background apps - no use but thanks jasong
With no Optimize quantizers/lock thread to core it goes even slower - but thanks anyway kronoxrox
Increasing the page file... i dunno i think it actually went even slower! but thanks imfreakin
daxtsu, great suggestion but dual core optimizer didnt do the trick and i have no speedstepping (no idea bout what that is as well). Might be the temperature? Where can i monitor it?
nemesis2004... im with you through this man. peace
omegadox, youre talkin gibberish to me but im sure youre really helpful and maybe someone will come out with something really useful (and more accessible to my knowledge)
I think i didnt forget anyone
Thanks all of you again!
... but the problem's still there... pants!
